The seminar parcipants considered the role of language and dialogue in engaging, movang and underpinning learning, thought and cognive development at all levels. For adult learners in parcular, they concluded, it is not just learning basic ‘reading, wring and a bit of speaking and listening’ but cricality and applicaon in every ‘literacy’ domain, whether media, science or computer, Interest was expressed in quality control mechanisms such as integrated assignment briefs, porolios, moderaon pracces, qualificaon outcomes and staff development. This es in to my own current research and long-‐term work interests in learning organisaons, networks and systemic quality improvement mechanisms.
I connuously find myself inspired by the commitment and successes of lifelong learning provision in the UK and abroad, in the face of all the challenges that present. A recent arcle in The Guardian “We're sll failing to teach children to read, aer all these years” (Comings, 2016) gives reason to be grateful for progress to date, although also shows how far we have to go. We live in hope that effecve pracces, once in existence, can be supported to gradually take root and grow in new contexts.
As a follow-‐up to the Uppingham Seminar in April, the Brish Associaon of Literacy in Development (BALID) is arranging a day seminar on literacies in lifelong learning, Friday 18 November 2016 at UCL Instute of Educaon in London, details to be confirmed.
