Style blends heritage with high performance acoustic design

S

tyle has delivered a bespoke acoustic solution as part of an extensive CAT B refurbishment of The Pattern Shop, a Grade II listed industrial landmark in Newcastle. Working alongside Overbury, Style installed Autex acoustic products across four fl oors, introducing high-impact design features that enhance the building’s heritage character while delivering effective acoustic performance for a contemporary workplace accommodating around 600 employees. A defi ning element of the scheme is the installation of more than 1,000 linear metres of Beam 100 rafts. Drawing on the site’s

railway heritage, the ceiling system forms a distinctive architectural feature across the top fl oor, balancing strong visual rhythm with superior sound absorption that contributes to an acoustically controlled environment. Complementing this,

Autex acoustic

wall panels were integrated throughout key areas to improve overall sound quality and occupant comfort.

Carefully positioned

within the building’s existing fabric, the solutions support a layered acoustic strategy that enables a mix of collaborative, focused and social working environments, while respecting the architectural integrity of the original structure.

Originally built as part of Robert Stephenson’s pioneering locomotive works in the early 1800s, The Pattern Shop remains one of Newcastle’s most signifi cant industrial heritage buildings. The Grade II listed structure has been sensitively reimagined, with original features such as exposed beams and cast iron columns carefully

BEWI plays key role in new Shrewsbury hospital project

O

ne of the latest builds in the Government’s £50 billion new hospital building and extensions programme is a new hospital currently being constructed over a period of three to fi ve years within the grounds of the existing Shrewsbury hospital. The new build is part of Shrewsbury and Telford Hospitals - Hospital Transformation Programme.

BEWI has been delighted to supply Jabfl oor Floor Insulation Boards on each level of the new building, in a total area of 20,000 ft2 during the course of the build.

The BEWI product was specifi ed due to its enhanced operating specifi cation and durability, as well as the fact it can withstand high loads, such as hospital beds and trolleys. Jabfl oor boards provide a cost-effective solution, while achieving impressive U-values and excellent compressive performance, making them suitable for a range of different fl oor applications. These include below ground supported slabs, above slabs and below chipboard, above slabs and below the screed, precast suspended concrete and cold stores. On this project the boards are being used below the screed as part of the underfl oor heating system of the hospital. The insulation boards are made from high-quality expanded polystyrene (EPS), and can be used primarily to provide thermal insulation in both domestic and commercial fl oors.

lightweight solution for ground-bearing and suspended construction.

They are available in a number of different thicknesses for different applications, ranging from Jabfl oor 70 for standard domestic loads, up to Jabfl oor 150 – 250 for heavy commercial or industrial use. Boards in a range of thicknesses, installed to a rigorous QA system, were used on this project to suit specifi c design requirements in differing areas within the hospital, including a specially produced Jabfl oor 300, demonstrating how BEWI is willing to work with its customers to produce tailored products to meet specifi c market needs.

retained to preserve its historic identity. The refurbishment demanded a highly considered approach to material selection and design integration,

ensuring modern workplace

requirements could be maintained without diminishing the character of the building. Style’s acoustic interventions play a key role in achieving this balance, introducing a design language that responds directly to the site’s industrial past.

Through a combination of technical expertise and architectural sensitivity, Style has contributed to the transformation of this landmark building,

demonstrating

how acoustic design can enhance both performance and spatial experience within complex heritage environments.
