SAFETY & SECURITY

Gilberts ups the standard in smoke and fi re protection

With growing emphasis on managing the risk of smoke and fi re within building safety, one of Britain’s leading air movement engineers Gilberts is leading the way to optimise control. To address increasing demand and to exceed criteria laid down in the latest Building Regulations, Gilberts is launching a new, fully tested range of insulated smoke and fi re dampers. The insulated dampers compliment Gilberts’ established Ductgard units for HVAC ductwork. The insulation element of the new dampers helps minimise the risk of heat transfer and thus the risk of fi re spreading beyond the compartment. Its performance exceeds the two relevant layers of fi re safety in buildings: integrity of compartmentation and structural safety. Spring and thermal fuse activated, the insulated dampers offer fi re resistance of EI30, EI60, EI90 and EI120 for general ventilation systems with walls and partitions of various ratings. Thus, they deliver effective cut-off partitioning between the fi re-engulfed zone and the remaining part of the building, helping maintain the building integrity. The range is fully tested and certifi ed to EN15650, EN13501-3 and EN1366-2.

The alterations and refurbishment of the SCR, Dining Hall and Kitchen at Trinity College Oxford are nearing completion with 9 mm and 12 mm Magply boards from the range of IPP Ltd, having been specifi ed to provide the necessary fi re compartmentation, as well as other performance benefi ts. The work to fi t out the kitchen, bar, offi ces, fully accessible toilets and ancillary areas is being undertaken by Savvy Construction, from nearby Horspath, while Original Field of Architecture is the architectural practice responsible for the design work. This has included using two layers of the A1 rated, non-combustible Magply to clad either side of timber studwork in order to create a half hour separation and provide compartmentation for a single storey staff sitting room. Independently tested to demonstrate they offer A1 non-combustible performance, Magply boards are routinely specifi ed in place of OSB and plywood as a sheathing for steel framed high-rise properties, as well as in fl at and pitched roof construction. With an ultra-low 0.01% chloride content, the stability and durability of Magply sees it recommended as a backer board for proprietary render systems.

Zeus Horizontal Barriers protect East Midlands offi ce’s stair cores High performance but lightweight fi re barriers from the range of FIREFLY®

24/01/2024 08:55 have been specifi ed by one of

the manufacturer’s Preferred Installers, to upgrade the fi re protection within the stair cores to a large offi ce property in the East Midlands continuing a burgeoning business relationship between the two specialists. The work on the two-storey commercial property, which dates from the 1990s, has been carried out by Coventry based KRASI Fire Protection using the FIREFLY®

Zeus Horizontal 60:30 barrier, with FIREFLY’s Technical

Manager for the region attending site to offer design guidance, as well as during the contract period. The improvements were confi ned to the fi rst-fl oor ceiling voids above each of the building’s four staircases, but will help ensure escape routes are maintained in the event of any future emergency. Horizontal is a lightweight fl exible fi re barrier designed to provide fi re compartmentation of larger concealed spaces and voids within buildings, offering 60 minutes integrity and 30 minutes insulation. It has been specifi cally developed and tested for horizontal installation, including fi tting around service penetrations.
