Introduction: Welcome to Ça Marche !

Ça Marche ! 1 is an engaging, fun, creative textbook and suite of resources which will guide you on your French language journey. You will learn the French language and have opportunities to use it in authentic situations relevant to modern life. You will learn about French life and culture, you will learn strategies to support and help you learn and you will also reflect on your experience. Each unit has a theme with specific authentic activities, where you can use your French in a variety of ways– listening, speaking, reading or writing.

In each unit there are portfolio activities relating to what you have learned – these allow you to practise your French. There is also the opportunity to use different ICT modes and oral presentations to extend your portfolio exercises. After every second unit you will find – A vous de jouer ! – Your turn/Give it a go! This is a section which includes practice exercises and games that you can play in class, as well as small dramas which you can have fun acting out.

The approach used throughout Ça Marche ! 1, is ‘Assessment for Learning (AfL)’, so you are constantly supported in your learning. Success criteria ensure you have specific guidelines for your portfolio pieces, self and peer assessment ensures you have detailed and specific feedback to inform your next step, Astuces provide strategies, along with discussion activities to ensure you understand new language points. Innovation, creativity, activity, engagement, authenticity and communication are central to each unit and the activities you will participate in. Like its title suggests, Ça Marche ! 1 works for your learning in every way.

Each unit uses the following features:

Unité opening page: Listed here is what you will be able to do by the end of the unit. You will reflect on this at the end of the unit through ‘can do’ statements in the Bilan de l’Unité.

Objectifs: Language targets throughout the text that you can use to self-assess your learning, giving you and your teacher a snap shot of how you are progressing.

Draw the face in the box next to the objective that best reflects your learning. z The happy face means you are fully confident and know this learning point.

z The neutral face means you are still not fully confident, and may either need to revise the learning point or ask your teacher to explain it again.

z The unhappy face means you are finding the area challenging. You should ask your teacher to explain it further.

Civilisation: There are lots of bespoke photo stories and other information about life and culture in France. You will have the opportunity to hear and see all about it and make comparisons with our own and other cultures. You will also see French teenagers talk about their lives in video blogs.

Mots-clés: The keywords you will meet and use throughout each unit. They are also summarised at the end of every unit (Récapitulatif), in one handy spot when you need to revise.

Astuces: Tips and learning strategies to help you as much as possible as you learn French.

ICT: Weblinks where you can find games, activities, famous French places, songs and lots of other fun French information at the click of the mouse in the eBook – or by typing the web address into your search bar.
