Safe use, handing and disposal of metalworking fluids

Over the last two decades many of the most important modifications to metalworking fluids (MWFs) within Europe have been related to health, safety or environmental concerns, which has translated into demands on the manufacturers and suppliers of metalworking fluids to provide products that are both safe to use and environ- mentally acceptable.

The regulatory environment as observed with issues such as changes to the labelling of several chemical raw materials, the implementation of REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and restriction of Chemicals), CLP (the European Classification, Labelling and Packaging regulation that implements the Globally Harmonised System known as GHS) and the Biocidal Products Directive, can not only significantly affect the formulatory approach to these already complex products, but brings into focus the need to raise awareness and educate end users about best practice in the use and handling of metalworking fluids in the workplace, as well as their eventual disposal.

The United Kingdom Lubricants Association (UKLA), formed a working group called the Metalworking Fluid Product Stewardship Group, which brought together those companies that had a commitment to the development, manufacture and marketing of safe and effective MWF products. The Group intends to assist in the education of end users, enhance the health and safety provision to the employees of members and their customers, consider the protection of the environment and provide qualified, reviewed information to industry, trade unions, Government and the general public.

A major activity of the Product Stewardship Group is the provision of recommendations and guidance on the safe use of metalworking fluids and in this regard the Group produced a film ‘The Safe Handling and Use of Metalworking Fluids’ in collaboration with the HSE, as well as a guidance document on the safe disposal of metalworking fluids produced in collab- oration with the UK Environment Agency and PERA.

Copies of the film are available in DVD format from UKLA (contact

enquiries@ukla.org.uk) and can also be viewed from the UK HSE website www.hse.gov.uk/metalworking/about.htm where you can also find more information about metalworking fluids.
