Adelphi asks: “Does vanity exist in industry?” Page 10

The functionality of a machine is important, but what about its aesthetics? The design of packaging machinery is heavily weighted towards function with little consideration given to form. What significant design aspects would you choose?

Lube-Tech Pages 23 to 26 Used Oil Re-refining: Improvements in CEP Technology Make Economics More Attractive Lube base oil is one of the most valuable components in a barrel of crude oil. While many components of crude oil are ‘lost’ after combustion, lube base oil can be recovered and ‘regenerated’ to the quality equal to or better than its original virgin form by using a proper re-refining process such as CEP’s hydrotreating process.

It turned out well!

The first part of the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has ended and I know that millions of people around the world have followed their country’s teams with great passion and interest. I would like to say a big well done to all the participants and especially to Team GB who exceeded all expectations. The second part of this event, the 2012 Paralympic Games will start in just over a week’s time.

Not many readers will know that the modern Parallel Olympics - or Paralympics - was born in 1948 a few miles from our office at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Buckinghamshire following pioneering work by neurologist Professor Sir Ludwig Guttmann and his team.

The London 2012 Olympic Games were probably the best ever held according to reports from the IOC and they had confounded all those who expected it would not match up to the highest standards. It was a great success for the competitors, the organisers and the sponsors and I even heard one spectator say it was the first time he thought the closing ceremony was even better than the opening ceremony.

If only Europe and many other countries in the rest of the world could match this by turning the corner and commencing sustained economic growth. I don’t have a magic wand to make this happen, but I am beginning to question some UK statistics, which continue to show we are in a double dip recession, while at the same time other statistics show month on month UK unemployment has decreased. I hope someone can find out why there is this anomaly, because it doesn’t make any sense and may be wrong! I mentioned in a previous report that at some stage Europe, especially the Euro Area States, need to agree a comprehensive solution to these on-going challenges, but the game of ‘pass-the-parcel’ continues and this isn’t helping.

I am delighted to report that Lube Magazine Digital has been launched in time for the October 2012 UEIL Congress and readers can opt for either printed or digital or both forms of the magazine. I hope these options ensure readers never miss a future copy.

Finally, next December I will come to the end of my time as Lube Magazine Editor and will become fully retired. I would like to say many thanks to all the readers for your support over the many years that I’ve been involved. One more issue to go!
