UNITI Mineral Oil Technology Forum
2016
This year the UNITI Technology Forum in Stuttgart welcomed a record number of attendees to its annual meeting held over consecutive days from April 12 to 14. Over six hundred delegates attended the event in Germany which is perhaps unique in the calendar as bringing together both fuels and lubricants representatives within the same venue.
The pre-conference seminars are always well attended. The Infineum Trends 2016 presentation led by Nick Burton held the evening before the conference, gave a packed audience the key market developments over the past few years and looked ahead at what these changes mean for lubricant blenders and marketers. Nynas also held a pre-conference Industry Forum where Apu Gosalia from FUCHS PETROLUB SE gave a compelling presentation on the subject of Die Schmierstoffindustrie – Unendliche Weiten …, or The Lubricants Industry - the final frontier.
Over the course of the two day conference, issues of sustainability both of lubricant supplies as well as sources of energy and application, were a common theme running through many presentations. Dr Wolfgang Warnecke from Shell set the conference in the context of global changes in the environment. By the year 2050 the projected population is expected to grow to 9 billion people with a consequential doubling of energy use. The European lubricants sector is certainly facing some significant challenges over the next few years. Rising consumer expectations for continued application performance coupled with more stringent regulatory emission regulations are creating a perfect storm of pressure on OEMs to respond positively to this changing environment. Lubricant performance in the future will need to meet exacting standards of performance as lower viscosities enable manufacturers to reap continued performance improvements from more efficient resource use.
