Since its launch, ScienceXperience has grown significantly and is now delivered across most BASF sites in the UK, from Callanish on the Isle of Lewis to Littlehampton on the south coast of England. In 2025, the Callanish site marked a major milestone by hosting its 20th ScienceXperience event, reaching nearly 400 pupils in under three years, with ambitions to engage every school on the remote Scottish island.
Matthew’s where over the course of the week, 25 BASF employees, supported by partner organisations, delivered more than 20 hands on STEM sessions for pupils from nursery to Year 6. Activities ranged from agriculture and food science to hand washing chemistry, learning about fossils, live animal sessions and a mobile planetarium, transforming the school into an immersive science environment for the entire week. The week showed pupils how science connects to the world around them while giving teachers valuable enrichment opportunities. Five years on from launching the BASF STEM Ambassador programme, the delivery of another STEM Week reflects the strength of long term collaboration between BASF, schools and local partners.
For BASF colleagues, the impact is just as tangible. “Seeing young people so engaged lifts everyone’s spirits! It is a powerful reminder that without science we’d still be cavemen - as one student told us! It’s moments like these that bring our whole site together and is hugely rewarding for all involved” said Karen Massey, Technology and Development Manager and ScienceXperience team leader at BASF’s Callanish site, reflecting on the site’s engagement with local schools.
STEM Ambassadors: Employees at the centre of engagement People are central to BASF’s STEM engagement in the UK. Through the national STEM Ambassadors programme, BASF colleagues volunteer their time to support schools through classroom activities, careers events and, most importantly, long-term partnerships. This commitment is particularly visible in Stockport, home to BASF’s UK headquarters. BASF STEM Ambassadors deliver around 40% of all STEM Ambassador activity in local primary schools, working closely with St Matthew’s, Larkhill and Dial Park — all located in areas facing higher levels of deprivation. By building sustained relationships, volunteers gain an understanding of each school’s needs and tailor support accordingly.
Each year the BASF team delivers a dedicated STEM Week. In 2026, the team joined students at St
Alongside direct delivery, BASF also supports initiatives that promote inclusive and pupil led science education. Through its partnership with The Great Science Share for Schools, a UNESCO supported global campaign, BASF helps create platforms where young people can share their own scientific questions and investigations. In 2025, BASF supported the first Stockport based Great Science Share event involving eight schools and 64 pupils, with BASF STEM Ambassadors facilitating discussion, questioning and peer to peer learning.
Creating a lasting impact Through these initiatives, BASF in the UK aims to create a lasting, positive experience of STEM for young people, shaped by hands on learning, repeated interaction and visible role models.
By working in partnership and joining forces with others, there is an opportunity to amplify impact, support schools more effectively and create STEM experiences that are inclusive, engaging and far reaching.
