high shock loading and extreme levels of water and dirt. Twenty long-haul truck wheel bearings were cleaned, evaluated and packed with the new lower soap grease. After 120,000 kilometres the bearing parts were removed and assessed by the Indian Institute of Petroleum, which rated them for visible damage.


Results from the field trial mirrored bench testing, with bearings showing only minimal wear and discoloration. No significant scoring, pitting, spalling, corrosion or roller end wear was seen. Following these excellent initial results, the OEM trial is now being extended to 160,000 kilometres, with the potential for this lower soap grease to prove its credentials over even longer service intervals.


Afton’s calcium sulphonate grease process is quicker than traditional processes, as well as saving cost by using less soap thickener and avoiding potential volatility in lithium pricing and availability. As an example of savings available, a grease blender


manufacturing about 10 metric tonnes a day could save in the region of €45,000 per year thanks to these technology and process benefits. Afton plans to continue exploring its use in wider applications; but for now, this new grease technology is bearing up well.
