Trading Standards Legislation and Light Duty Engine Oil Sequences

Primary Authority Advice from Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards

VLS has recently received assured advice from Buckinghamshire & Surrey Trading Standards under its Primary Authority relationship, to the standing and treatment of the ACEA engine oil sequences in law.

The ACEA engine oil sequences, which have been updated for light duty engine sequences this year, form part of voluntary industry standards for lubricant companies making claims for suitability for use in vehicles in order to address engine development needs that are driven by a combination of regulatory and performance requirements.

The sequences and their application are voluntary for the sector, and lubricant companies can choose whether to make claims against them. Once lubricant companies choose to participate and make self-certifying claims against these standards then any claims made need to accord with relevant civil

and criminal law to ensure protection for consumers against unfair trading practices.

This would include any actions by retailers in making false claims, undertaking misleading actions or making misleading omissions.

The advice has been posted to the VLS website and is available for all VLS members and indeed any lubricant company making claims against the ACEA engine oil sequences and placing these products on the United Kingdom market.

VLS hosts press lunch for key industry journalists

VLS has invited a selection of journalists from across the aftermarket media to an exclusive press lunch this month at the RAC Club in London. As part of the VLS initiative to educate and protect end users, the event will give the press the opportunity to meet new VLS Chairman Mike Bewsey and Chairman of the Technical Review Panel Dr. Ted Wright. Through an open Q & A forum, attendees will learn more about the new ACEA engine oil sequences and their impact on the UK lubricants market.

The last press lunch VLS held in 2019 received unanimous praise, with journalists commenting on how interesting, informative and enjoyable the lunch was.

Two years later, VLS is looking forward to welcoming back some familiar faces as well as meeting new journalists that have recently moved into the aftermarket sector.
