ACCREDITATION CERTIFICATE GOES TO TOP UK OIL FIRM

Global oil giant TOTAL has proved it is a beacon in engineering training after winning accreditation for a prestigious scheme.

TOTAL E&P UK PLC, the Total Group’s exploration and production division in the UK, has been awarded the accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) to run their Monitored Professional Development Scheme (MPDS). The four-year scheme provides engineering graduates with a structured programme of career development. It also helps form the foundations for Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

The scheme, now recognised as a national hallmark of excellence in training for mechanical engineers, means those enrolled on it at TOTAL will be assured high level training, development and support which will lead to them getting CEng registration. Throughout training, engineers are given a thorough grounding in aspects of

business, technology competence, innovation and interpersonal

TOTAL is one of the top oil companies in the world and has operations in more than 100 countries. Its activities span all aspects of the energy industry as well as international trading in both crude and refined products.

The MPDS is now run by hundreds of companies across the UK and aims to develop young engineers so they can contribute to their firm’s success. The ImechE underpins industry with a supply of high quality graduates from accredited universities. Graduate engineers actively seek organisations such as TOTAL, which facilitate an MPD scheme as a recognised programme that leads to chartered status.

CROMPTON PETROLEUM ADDITIVES INCREASES PRICES ON CALCIUM SULPHONATES AND SYNTON®

Crompton Corporation’s Petroleum Additives business has increased global prices by $0.10/lb. on its Calcinate®, Hybase® and Lobase® calcium sulphonates and on its Synton polyalphaolefin (PAO) 40 and 100 grades, effective November 15, 2004 or as contracts allow.

“A number of economic factors continue to drive prices upward in our industry,” said Janet Mann, vice president of Crompton Petroleum Additives. In the case of Synton PAO products, the rising cost of the key raw material, decene, continues to shrink our margins which further prevents us from making any new investment in our Elmira, Ontario, Canada production facility presently running at full capacity. Escalating raw material costs are also impacting our calcium sulphonate products and the opportunity to reinvest in our plants in North America

and Europe, where we are also running full-out,” she said.

Crompton’s Petroleum Additives business offers one of the most comprehensive lines of components to lubricant additive formulators and manufacturers of products for the transportation, industrial, grease, and fuel additive markets. These lubricant components allow customers to formulate products that meet demanding new industry specifications driven by higher performance and advanced environmental requirements.

NEW UNITS IMPROVE BIFFA WATER-RECYCLING CAPABILITIES

Waste giant Biffa has expanded its water recycling capabilities with the purchase of two “state of the art” jet/vac, water recycling combination units. The machines will provide a cost-effective cleaning service for new and existing customers and are capable of cleaning drains, sewer pipes and culverts over a wide range of diameters, typically 300 - 1000mm using high efficiency jetting / spinning nozzles delivering 60 gallons per minute at 2,500 PSI.

14 ISSUE NO. 64 DECEMBER 2004

Said Adrian Rees, general manager environmental services, “When working on drain systems with a good flow of water the machines will remove debris and liquid back through the suction hose and into the tanker. This is then separated and filtered, allowing

water to be reused in the jetting operation. This enables the machines to be significantly more productive than standard jet/vac vehicles as there is a greatly reduced requirement to refill with clean water.”

A further benefit afforded by the new vehicles is that they meet the pre-treatment requirements of the Landfill Directive, meaning that debris collected by the tankers can be disposed of at non-hazardous landfill sites.
