essica Kingsley Publishers takes this award for the second time in three years, after a best-ever year of sales across professional, trade, digital,
rights and direct-to-consumer channels. The business has gone from strength to
strength since its acquisition by Hachette in 2017, following 30 years of independence under founder Jessica Kingsley. Since then, m.d. Sanphy Thomas has nurtured its backlist strength in subjects like social work, autism and therapies, while expanding into new areas and topical frontlist publishing. JKP’s team has stepped up to the challenges

of the pandemic, including through a new “Our Kids in Mind” podcast to support young people’s wellbeing at a time of immense disruption for many, and responding to Covid’s unique impacts on autistic people with its début Connected by Autism conference. Ranges on urgent issues such
as gender diversity, trans people’s experiences and neurodiversity mean it is at the front of publishing’s efforts to make its output properly inclusive too. Other achievements during the year included a project to create the first set of guidelines for producing dyslexia-friendly texts and workplaces, now in place across Hachette. The British Book Awards judges admired
JKP’s commitment to all the subjects it covers. “There is a real social mission to its publishing and it’s tightly tied to the communities it serves.” They also liked its powerful combination of inde- pendent spirit and resources within Hachette. “Hachette has done a great job of integrating the business without diminishing its personality and individuality—the DNA remains intact.” The judges also noted the resilience and
innovation of the eight shortlisted publishers. “It could have been a very tough year in these markets… but they all excelled.”
