THE BRITISH BOOK AWARD FOR EXPORT THAMES & HUDSON

THE SHORTLIST Bonnier Books UK Canongate DK Faber HarperCollins Pan Macmillan Wonderbly

onsidering the potent mix of Covid lockdowns, supply disruption, rising costs and reduced travel, the exports of the eight publishers on this shortlist

reached remarkable highs in 2021. From this ultra-competitive field, illustrated publisher Thames & Hudson (T&H) emerged to take its first ever British Book Award. The business surged past £10m in export sales

for the first time in seven decades of publishing, despite months of closures for the galleries and museums that usually provide core sales. Before visits there bounced back as lockdowns eased, it filled the gap by focusing on internet retail and non-traditional channels, such as lifestyle and clothing chains. Standout export hits of the year included David Hockney’s Spring Cannot be Cancelled and some high-value books with global fashion houses like Chanel and Versace. Like many export teams, T&H adjusted well to

the absence of field trips and book fairs, taking sales meetings and promotions online. It also coped admirably with Brexit-related disrup- tion to supply, helping European retailers deal with baffling new bureaucratic requirements on imports. Retailers repay that support with deep loyalty. “What makes Thames & Hudson so special is that it’s a large-scale publisher with a familial way of doing business,” said one of many glowing testimonials. The judges praised the ability of its team to

carve out new channels, and its outstanding service. “Illustrated publishing has really felt the squeeze in the past couple of years, but its move into ‘non-traditional’ sales has more than made up for that,” they said. “There is a lot of creative thinking going on, and it is a deeply personal approach… a bespoke bookselling service that in the past couple of years has become even more important.”
