A

lexandra Pringle is one of publishing’s most experienced and influential editors, having started out at Virago Press before several of the eight

other people on this shortlist were born. But this title is no lifetime achievement award. Instead it rewards what in many ways was the culmination of four decades of work in publishing—more than half of them spent building Bloomsbury into a literary powerhouse. Pringle’s 2021 was dominated by three big

critical and commercial successes. Susanna Clarke’s Piranesi won the Women’s Prize, while Abdulrazak Gurnah received the Nobel Prize in Literature. Ten years on from the release of Madeline Miller’s The Song of Achilles—another Pringle-edited Women’s Prize winner—Pringle helped steer the book back into the bestseller list following a wave of interest on TikTok. Having supported each of these three authors

for more than a decade, their achievements were testament to Pringle’s long-term backing of her authors and her collaborative approach within Bloomsbury and beyond. “Her eye is sharp, her energy boundless, her generosity legendary and her acumen unsurpassed,” said one author. “From the moment she arrived at Bloomsbury, she was a force of nature. She has known in her bones the titles which have gone on to become classics of our time,” added a colleague. The British Book Awards judges also admired

Pringle’s astute editing, exacting standards and visionary leadership, as well as her achievements beyond Bloomsbury, including support of other editors and honorary doctorates and fellowships. “She has been one of Britain’s great editors for many years now, and it’s wonderful to see all her hard work for authors bearing fruit. She marries critical and commercial success in a way that few can.”
