W INTRODUCTION
elcome to the British Book Awards 2022 Winners’ Supplement. It has been an immense privilege and total pleasure to run the awards this year. It has been particularly welcome to gather altogether again at Grosvenor House London. It was also important to deliver the live-stream
(aſter two years of practising with the digital Nibbies!) to people across the UK and beyond, with two spectacular parties taking place in Manchester and Edinburgh. In the past two years, the digital Nibbies have expanded and enriched our audience, and we are thrilled to have established a new tradition. And to the “old timers” who have been guests at this event even more times than we have... We hope you found the British Book Awards 2022 compelling, and more inspiring than ever. The British Book Awards celebrate the world of books at its finest. It aims to affirm, connect and energise all who have a hand in creating books and all who read them, by showcasing the authors and illustrators who have stirred our hearts and imaginations, and the industry behind the scenes that has brought them to readers.
This year the Nibbies expanded with new book awards, the reintroduction of the Individual Bookseller gong, and a much- needed Freedom to Publish Award. Naturally there are limits, but we strive to strike a balance between the many different sectors of the industry, and the amount of atention we can give to each prize. There is more work to do, of course, and we will continue to reflect on how the event can best represent the sector. We hope that however you atended this year’s ceremony, you found it a distinctly different and empowering show: the sector has had a remarkable two years, but not every aspect of the industry works for every individual within it, and we hope that in demonstrating what is good and done well we can send a signal more widely. The celebrations do not end here, of course. This year we asked “Main Characters” to do a series of podcasts around the shortlistees and winners, so do tune in. Fane Productions will stream a British Book Awards special. And, if you have a taste for book award ceremonies, the Jhalak Prize follows hot on our heels. We must give thanks to the loyal sponsors and partners who have
supported the event tonight—and through two digital editions. And finally, all of us in The Bookseller team feel enormously privileged to be entrusted with the organisation of this event, one which recognises the best of everything in our business. We have all recently been through extraordinary times, but rest assured, we remain, as we should be, in your corner.
