The received wisdom has always been that the children’s market can weather crises as parents will always stump up for kids’ books. That may yet prove to be the case for the entire year, but in the first half of 2023 BookScan’s Children’s category contracted 3.4% to £181.5m. It is worth noting that we are coming off by far Children’s biggest-ever 12 months— (in full-year 2022 it was worth £445.3m) and 2023’s total is beter than all but two previous half-years.

Spare leads a standout first half for Penguin Random House, the only Big Four publisher to see rises in both value (+12.1% to £152.9m) and volume (+3% to 17.4 million copies). PRH dominated the top of the bestseller lists with Prince Harry’s tome capturing both the volume (almost 700,000 copies) and value (£9.3m) crowns by some distance (some crowns are more atainable than others). PRH also had the bestselling adult fiction title (Bonnie Garmus’ Lessons in Chemistry) and the breakout cookery brand (Nathan Antho- ny’s Bored of Lunch titles). Nine books in 2023 earned more than £1m through the TCM; PRH published seven of them. Hachete was marginally down year-on-year
(–1% to £101.3m) while Pan Macmillan dipped 2.3% to £36.5m. HarperCollins joined PRH as the only other Big Four house to show value growth—up 2.7% to £67.3m—led by David Walliams (though his sales contracted 23% on 2022), Bella Mackie’s seemingly unstoppable How to Kill Your Family and Never Never, the HQ-published collaboration between Hoover and her fellow US-based novelist Tarryn Fisher.
