also provided an opportunit for the team to reconsider some aspects of running the shop, which has turned out to be a positive thing. “The Covid lockdowns were a blow, but they forced us to look at how we operated and to make various changes, which have proved advantageous since,” Sansbury says. He adds: “We kept in touch with our
customers, delivering door to door and offer- ing a click-and-collect service, and there was a massive rush of goodwill when we finally re-opened fully. This has carried on for a year or two and, although everyone is suffering from the current financial crisis, we are lucky to have a lot of loyal customers who are keen to support us.”
Because the bookshop has been around for so long, it is popular among locals and even customers from places as far away as Canada. The team also works on their social media presence to keep growing the shop’s brand. “Instagram, Twiter and Facebook are all good ways to publicise our stock, our events, even our staff, and our annual participation in the Ilkley Literature Festival, where we are official booksellers, cements our relationship with publishers and takes our brand far beyond Ilkley,” the manager says. “Ilkley is a big tourist town, so even when our lovely, loyal, longstanding customers are away, we have visitors from all over the world who love to come and see us.” There is a reason so many people visit from all over the world; it’s a place that was many things before it became the Grove Bookshop. But it is obvious, before you even walk in, that it was always meant to sell books.
