Comfort Food shiſting 14,432 a week ago. While no number-one bestseller has sold more than 25,000 copies since the second week of 2022, the print market has remained resilient despite the sluggishness at the very top. The market has only once dropped below 3.5 million books sold in the first six weeks of the year, and its lowest value has been £29.9m. In volume terms, no year since 2011 has notched up sales

so high so early. It’s been 13 years since any week in the first six weeks of the year has hit a value above £30m—it last happened in 2009. Adult Fiction and Children’s in particular have been driving the boom, up 34% and 23% in volume respectively over the past six weeks compared to two years ago.

Of course, due to Lockdown 3.0 in 2021 preventing Nielsen BookScan reporting weekly sales figures,

we can only compare last week to early 2020. Against one of the last few pre-pandemic weeks in February two years ago, last week was 11.8% up in volume and 9.8% in value. Rebecca Ross’ fantasy title A River Enchanted swam into the Continues overleaf 

Pearse’s The Sanatorium made a similar leap, climb- ing five places to claim the runner-up spot. Maggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet has been a stellar

seller in print since its publication in paperback, becoming the first post-Lockdown 3.0 number one through Nielsen BookScan in March 2021. After a brief sojourn at 99p, its e-book edition bounced into the Bookstat top 10 last week, joined by the equally briefly discounted Billy Connolly’s Windswept & Interesting, fresh from hitting the 2021 Biography and Autobiography category’s top two—and claim- ing the Scotland number one (see pp46–47). Elly Griffiths’ The Locked Room battered down

the door to the Publisher E-Book Ranking number one for the week ending 5th February, ending Richard Osman’s long reign with The Thursday Murder Club. Victoria Henry’s TheImpulsePurchase and Ant Middleton’s MentalFitness débuted in
