named the Waterstones Book of the Year of 2020 in December. Despite the holes in Nielsen BookScan data leſt by lockdown, Hamnet still sold 85,815 units in hardback—by far the author’s biggest seller in the format to date through the TCM.

A year on from

Hamnet’s hardback début—and with the UK somehow still in lockdown—the paperback has entered the UK chart at the very top,

giving O’Farrell her first number one of the BookScan era. Its 22,921-copy sale is a whopping 285% up on the launch-week volume of her last fiction paperback, This Must Be the Place, in April 2017. ike Omer’s A Deadly Influence swiped the Bookstat number one for the week ending 3rd April, topping a chart heavy

with Amazon-published, Kindle Unlimited titles. We’ve seen before how the turn of the month, and the release of new titles for Kindle Unlimited customers, can see them thunder into the chart on higher estimated weekly volume sales than normal. Glendy Vanderah’s The Light Through the Leaves, Jane Healey’s The Scene Stealers and Adam Mitzner’s The Perfect Marriage also rocketed up the e-book chart. Richard Osman’s The Thursday Murder Club

re-claimed the Publisher E-Book Ranking number one spot for the week ending 27th March, with Lee and Andrew Child’s The Sentinel, the print number one at the time, returning to the chart in the runner-up spot. Lucy Clarke’s Castaways was the ranking’s sole new entry, as lockdown classics Delia Owens’ Where the Crawdads Sing and Lisa Jewell’s The Family Upstairs bounded back into the chart.
