aggie O’Farrell’s Hamnet has cast itself right into the Official UK Top


50 number one in its first week on sale, selling 22,912 copies. The hardback came out a year ago, amid the chaos of the UK’s first lockdown. Though it hit the Top 50 in its launch week, Hamnet’s hardback suffered from bookshops closing for the first time and, for a brief period, even Amazon prioritising deliveries of essentials over books (pause to acknowledge that anyone reading this will of course consider books to be the ultimate essential). However, Hamnet’s rocky sales


trajectory was buffeted twice in the autumn, with the title winning first the Women’s Prize in September, and then being
