Lockdown design competition | FOCUS The Finalists ANITA DE VILLIERS
The brief was specifi c to the family’s requirements but these talented designers came up with such varied and creative concepts for the lighthouse
BATHROOM CONCEPT DESIGN AWARD ADAM HODGSON
CLAIRE BLOOM
GARETH GILCHRIST
JAYNE HIDDLESTON
This design had many futuristic elements, such as the memory pod and the smart lighting. Spa elements were added, including a seating area and the hammock-like bath and practical features such as the laundry chute from the bedroom above and blackout glass for privacy. The bathroom has a variety of coloured lights that can be changed to suit a certain mood.
This design is all about zones. At one end, there is an open shower space, the bathing area is in the middle section with a double vanity and seating, and a concealed toilet and laundry area can be found at the other end. This layout makes the bathroom feel open and spacious, as there is no major dividing line, apart from the one for the toilet for privacy.
Bloom’s design focuses on the brief that stipulated no straight lines within the bathroom. The centre of the bathroom has a swirl feature that creates separate rounded areas for the shower, sauna, and toilet. The bath is elevated with curved steps that go up to the bathing area. The
entrance of the bathroom is via stairs that curve around the walls.
Gilchrist decided to split the bathroom in half with the fi rst half being an entranceway with seating and the staircase, and the other half the bathroom itself. The dividing
shoji-style Japanese door is reclaimed and there are other features that draw on international inspiration. The shower area is closed off and is behind the large freestanding bath, which is in the centre of the room.
The design puts its central focus on the bath with terrazzo and glass details. There are eco-friendly aspects to the design, such as the toilet cocoon, which features a
compostable WC and lots of air-purifying plants. The overall tone of the bathroom is about relaxation with a hanging chair by the window and a clear space for David, the husband, to practise yoga.
KITCHEN CONCEPT DESIGN AWARD JENN MATHERS
NATHAN HARRIS
SANDY ARMITAGE
SCOTT MARKS
SCOTT LAWRENCE
Mathers’s design focused on eco-friendly materials and products. Kitchen carcasses are made from reclaimed wood and even the paint is non-toxic. A key feature of this design is the wine cooler that sits under the island and is temperature-controlled to keep the wine fresh. The black marble central island is a focal point of the kitchen and incorporates a breakfast bar.
The curves of the lighthouse were a focus for this design, as the kitchen cabinets are all around the outside of the wall to form a semicircle. In the middle of the kitchen is a large table that has a herb garden in its centre. The majority of the appliances are hidden to improve the fl ow of the room and many have smart functionality, as this was specifi ed in the brief.
The overall winner was Scott Lawrence with his design for the Concept of the Year Award. With a special mention for Jayne Hiddleston.
And the winner is... September 2020 ·
Armitage opened out the the kitchen to feature an open-air skylight and multiple windows that show off the view to the coast. Wood is a key feature of the design, with the same texture used on the kitchen cabinets, the roof beams and the details on the windows and doors. The kitchen island is semicirc ular with pan storage above and a breakfast bar area.
Marks designed a blue marble kitchen that has a lot of adjustable elements to it. Firstly, the dining room table is on a pulley system and can be lifted up and down, while the kitchen cabinets can be adjusted at an angle. The tall units are suspended on a pivot system that can be moved easily, so the husband and wife can both use the kitchen and appliances comfortably.
Lawrence’s kitchen is full of hi-tech appliances, like ovens with built-in cameras that lower from the ceiling. The dining table is connected to the kitchen and can go from the Japanese seiza to a European sitting height on chairs. Other features of the kitchen include a wine store, a walk-in larder, a dog pod, a breakfast seating area, and a kids’ play area.
