Smart ideas

Despite the well documented rise of ‘smart’ products, many kitchen and bathroom retailers still don’t really know where to start in bringing everything together to create a connected-home solution. Sean Hannam speaks to Pip Evans (pictured), director of smart home and AV installation company NV Integration, in London, to get some advice

T

hanks to the increasing amount of connected tech we use in our everyday

lives, more of us are aware of the smart home and its benefits. Many specialist kitchen and bathrooms designers are embracing the smart home concept, but are some still baffled by it, or afraid to ask the most basic questions when they’re working with an AV installer on a project? We spoke to Pip Evans, director of award-winning smart home and AV installation company NV Integration, which is based in central London, to find out how designers and integrators can successfully work together on a smart home project to achieve what the client wants and get his expert knowledge on what pitfalls to avoid.

October 2021 · Q & A

Q: Can you give us some background on your company and tell us what you do? A: We were formed in 2010, but we started trading in 2012. We pretty much solely work on high-end residential, mostly around Knightsbridge, in London – it’s a lovely place to work, but it has its own particular challenges. We’ve worked on projects all over the world – our USP is to be design-conscious. We’re pretty active with CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association) – we are one of their Members of Excellence, which means we’re one of 14

companies in the world that have achieved that top-tier status. We’ve won a number of awards, including Best Smart Home for CEDIA, we invest in training for our staff and we educate the wider community about what we do.

Q: Do you find that KBB specialists and consumers understand the concept of the smart home? A: It really depends on the person – people like to talk about their own experiences. We used to sell a lot of hi-fi – if you

wanted to sell a system, you had to listen to a guy tell you about his hi-fi for 45 minutes before he’d ever buy anything new. It’s a similar thing with the smart home – people will say, ‘oh, yeah – I bought my son this thing for Christmas. He loves it and he uses it to turn on his lights’ – they’re talking about Amazon Alexa. You can’t pooh-pooh that, but you can say to them: ‘Great – we can work with that if you want us to, but it’s not the most secure system’, and we can outline some of the positive stuff that we do.
