How to… get your projects featured in magazines

You’ve designed a stunning kitchen or bathroom that you and your clients are delighted with. So how can you get it featured in a consumer magazine? Lindsay Blair, features editor at Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms has this advice…

G 1 2

etting your projects featured in a consumer magazine like Kitchens Bedrooms & Bathrooms is a brilliant way to showcase the very best of

your work. It’s a great advert for your company and can be an effective way to find new clients. The good news is that there’s no dark art to getting your projects included in our pages, you just need to follow a few simple steps.

Get in touch We can’t feature your projects if we don’t know you’re there, so the first most important step is to get in touch. Pick up the phone and introduce yourself. This is also a good way to find out who the best person to contact for real home projects is – there may be a dedicated homes editor you should e-mail directly.

Send images

No magazine will feature your project without first seeing what it looks like. E-mail in a selection of low-resolution images that

show the whole space. These don’t need to be professional shots (snaps on a phone are fine), so long as they’re clear. Also, provide a short description of the project – where is it, how you tackled the brief and any key features – to help us build up a picture of the design story. At this point, if a project isn’t right for the magazine, we will tell you and give you feedback on the types of projects that might work better.

About the photography Where possible, we like to send our own photographers to take pictures. So, it’s important to check that your clients are happy for this to happen – and whether they are willing to appear in the pictures. If they don’t, this doesn’t necessarily matter, but it’s useful to know this from the start. If you have already had the project shot professionally, magazines will often still use the photos – it will depend on the quality and number of images. Just be clear about the fact that these are the final shots.

A word on exclusivity You should be able to assure us that the project is exclusive (ie: it hasn’t featured in

another interiors magazine). If you’ve featured it on your website or social media, that’s fine, but not if it’s due to appear or has already appeared in any form in a competitor’s publication. We also ask that if you’re using it for advertising or marketing purposes, you do so after we have featured the images.

Get ready for an interview Make sure you have all the facts and figures about the project to hand, plus floorplans.

When we accept a project for the magazine, a journalist will get in touch to interview you about every aspect. So, have the makes, models and

where all the materials came from at your fingertips so you can answer all the questions easily.

6 7 Be patient!

Consumer magazines have very long lead times, so if we accept a project or even commission the photographs, it can still be months before the magazine featuring your project comes out. We try to feature projects that work well at different times of the year or that match specific themes in a particular issue – so please be patient. If we like it, we’ll use it – it could just take a while. If you don’t want to wait and want to try another publication, that’s fine, just please let us know.

On publication

When the magazine featuring your project comes out, we are happy to supply PDFs

of the feature for you to use on your website or social media, so long as you credit us. And if you want to display a few copies of the magazine in your showroom or to show your customers, that would be great.
