Care home design

expand and grasp the opportunity to bring transformation to countless lives without the price tag of a super-luxury care home. That is the dream Anavo is bringing to reality.

Changing places

In the UK, the move to a care home is often seen as a last resort. I can remember visiting my grandma some years back, and thinking how soulless, sterile, clinical and impersonal the home environment felt. Walking through the long corridors, I can only imagine how daunting the experience must have been for her having to leave her own home and move to a place that felt very much like a hospital.

Our commitment for Anavo - working in partnership with Liberty - is to change that narrative, taking away the stigma of ageing and what living in a care home has often looked like. By creating open, welcoming and accessible homes full of life for all generations and making the most of the latest technology, our aim is to improve residents’ quality of life with emphasis on physical and mental wellbeing and their safety.

Bringing Anavo’s model to life in the home environment Anavo’s model of care is based on international research and observing innovative approaches that have worked across the world.

We plan to utilise the household model creating groups of eight to ten residents with similar interests who share communal spaces. Staff will also be matched with residents, based on their areas of expertise and interests, so the environment is much more engaging. Safe, healthy, active and inviting

spaces are at the heart of what we will create. We want to move away from a model of passive care and empower our residents. By building homes where they can enjoy interactions with people of all ages, we can build meaningful connections and share quality time together.

Our homes will be positive and vibrant places, where residents and staff take pride in their environment. Our residents will be encouraged to be active, and we will have the appropriate framework to positively manage any risks. If they want to cook their own food, make a cup of tea or bake a cake, they can use the residents’ kitchen.

Just like a little village, the designs include functional spaces for the whole family unit with children’s playgrounds, libraries, a café and outdoor garden allotments to provide more opportunities for social interaction and fun - and what a great place to welcome families, friends, and members of the local community.

Imagine an environment where people

actually want to spend time, and where, at the end of a visit, they feel energised rather than downhearted.

Meaningful connections We have changed the way we learn about people’s lives so we can create meaningful connections. Instead of filling a long form, understanding one’s life story allows us to get to know the person they once were and are now. By listening to those who have been involved in their lives, we will be able to allocate the right staff and offer the right environment and activities for them. Whether this is watching their favourite sport or doing some gardening, the care home design will provide the space to keep residents engaged and build a life in a new setting.

As an added benefit, our international learning has indicated that this approach also has the potential to reduce challenging behaviours in people with dementia.

Outside spaces

We all know that fresh air and simply seeing the sky above us and the natural environment around us is vital to uplifting our spirits. We thought about how the residents might want to use the space. As a result, we intend to incorporate private gardens, covered balconies, animal corners, sports areas and allotments into the design. It might be raining, the sun may be beating down, but there will still be an opportunity to be outside. Whatever the residents grow on the allotments and flower beds could be sold in a resident-run shop that will also be open to members of the local community. The sports areas will be safe spaces for residents to exercise, but again, can be used by staff members, families and friends as well as the local community.
