commitment to the research and promotion of the “safe, efficient, effective and environmentally sustainable design and management of buildings and facilities for health services”. With this in mind, a study was undertaken to review the specialist literature on health environment architecture, to determine the frequency of articles published in these journals relating to sustainability and human comfort and to identify the most common topics for analysis. The survey looked at articles published from 1 January 2010 to 1 January 2018 that considered sustainability and comfort solutions in healthcare buildings. A total of 153 articles were identified


and later analysed, with about 16 per cent of the articles relating to ‘comfort’ and 14 per cent discussing ‘sustainability’. The largest proportion of articles on sustainability were found in the IFHE Digest; about 78 per cent of the articles published, representing 11 per cent of the total. It can therefore be assumed that there is great interest in this area and important sustainable design solutions are being developed in many IFHE member countries.


Common themes Four categories were identified: sustainability; equipment and technologies; human comfort; and design. These categories show growing interest in the development of research relating to sustainability and human comfort in architectural design in hospitals and other health services. Therefore these areas should be considered when discussing the skills and abilities necessary in future architects and engineers as well as in

Conclusion The importance of applying design solutions for human comfort and sustainability obtained by architects and engineers in health buildings should be widely disseminated. To link functional and aesthetic elements with the landscape, the use of colour and other components is vital to the concept of humanisation in healthcare. The work discussed considers how


the architectural and engineering design aspects of comfort and sustainability can inform the further development of sustainability and humanisation of comfort in healthcare buildings in different parts of the world. It is not intended to alter the design process, but to present elements that can contribute to the development of innovative solutions to the practical problems of human comfort and sustainability.

the development of architectural projects for health service buildings requires specialist knowledge of the services provided and the physical characteristics of the building as well as specialist technical knowledge. “The conception of the design solution, besides meeting the demands of the technology in health, regional geographical characteristics, flexibility of spaces determined by epidemiological variables, should consider, with fundamental relevance, user satisfaction through environmental comfort in its various aspects: visual, higrothermal, acoustic, light, olfactory and ergonomic.”3


Health Architecture in Latin America by Fábio Bitencourt and Luciano Monza, published by Editora Rio Books, is available in Spanish and in English. It offers architectural and engineering professionals and specialists an opportunity to understand the breadth and diversity of healthcare solutions in specific regions. This extends from the extremes of Mexico, Guatemala and Costa Rica to Argentina and Chile, Colombia, Peru, Venezuela, Uruguay and Brazil. It includes contributions from the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) relating to its outstanding work on projects in Brazil, the Caribbean (Belize, Saint Lucia, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago), Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua and Uruguay.
