Equipment installation: testing/commissioning
Over the past few years, there has been a stronger interest in integrating medical equipment with hospital construction projects in Spain. Medical equipment project management alone may be time consuming, requiring experts in different fields.
The installation testing and commissioning phase of a project may need 60-70 per cent of the resources of the equipment project. This requires the use of management tools to: prepare the area before equipment is installed; keep track of all the purchased furniture, fixtures and equipment and the installation process; and if possible to keep all the documents linked to the process in one place. Some authors consider building information modelling (BIM) the solution to easily managing a project. However, implementing a complete BIM model - useful even for the end user - requires more resources than the traditional approach and does not usually cover equipment. However, Codebook can be used to gain full control of a hospital project during the early stages and requires a limited number of resources. Equipment planning may be
considered a discipline on its own.1 The importance of including it in a hospital project was discussed by Meirovich and Sengozi at the East African Regional Scientific Conference in Nairobi in 20162 and by Abola et al in ‘Challenges faced during the development of new high demand public hospitals’.3

installation and start up are the outcome of a comprehensive process that starts with equipment planning.4–6 The integration of medical equipment planning into the hospital design and construction process is not common in Spain. However, there has been increasing interest in this approach over the past few years and therefore there is a need for robust applications to manage the process. In order to find the right management tools, it is important to identify the critical activities of the process and those that consume the most resources and then either to develop your own tools or look for the right tools that are already available. equipment project needs to handle pre- installation, installation, data, transport information, contract deadlines, training schedules and much more for as many as 15,000 items in a medium sized project. Contracts are managed in one way, construction contractors want their information in AutoCAD, Revit or similar
formats, accountants are only interested in Excel spreadsheets, suppliers have manuals in PDF and data sheets in Word format, project managers want to follow their planning sheets and all this data needs to be collected and managed by the equipment planning team in an organised way.

Claudio Meirovich has over 20 years’ experience working on hospital equipment projects and has been involved in more than 75 projects in over 30 countries around the globe where he was responsible for
tendering, bidding, evaluating, supervising, installing or training staff on medical equipment and hospital installations related issues. He has a biomedical engineering degree from the UNER University in Argentina, a
masters degree in hospital planning and design from UOC in Spain and an MBA from the IE Business School of Madrid. He started Meirovich
Consulting in 2011 and has completed over 20 projects. He also belongs to several technical and professional national and international associations.

Guadalupe González Nagy is an architect from the UCV University of Venezuela with wide experience in the design and development of
healthcare architectural projects. She started her professional career in 2006 working for an architecture firm specialising in the design and the evaluation of healthcare facilities. She joined Meirovich Consulting five
years ago and has been involved in projects in countries including Uganda, Ukraine, Romania, Nicaragua, Panama and St Lucia.
