ACCESSIBILITY
water and insulated pipes prevent burns for users who may not sense heat. The elongated floor-mounted toilets carry CSA approval for accessibility use, with precise spacing between wall and toilet centre (460-480mm) that meets accessibility standards while providing adequate manoeuvring room. The lock system utilises swipe/button activation to eliminate the need for gripping and twisting, making it easier for users with limited hand mobility.
Thoughtful details and infection control Flush handles positioned on the transfer side of toilet bowls accommodate wheelchair users, while toilet paper dispensers installed at two different heights ensure everyone can access supplies comfortably. The dispensers are designed for easy access by individuals with limited dexterity while meeting infection prevention and control requirements. Surfaces throughout are designed for easy cleaning with approved wipes to meet stringent healthcare standards, and strategically positioned flush levers prevent users from reaching across toilet bowls. Even seemingly minor details – like the wall- mounted container positioned to avoid interfering with transfers – demonstrate how comprehensive accessibility thinking influences every design decision. Back support elements that were on backorder have now arrived and will be installed shortly to complete the initial phase.
Looking forward: Phase 2 and beyond The current washrooms represent just the beginning. Phase 2 plans include installation of ‘L’ shaped grab bars, all CSA-approved for accessibility use, providing additional support and stability options for users with varying needs. This phased approach reflects IWK
Health’s understanding that accessibility is an ongoing journey rather than a destination. Each enhancement builds on previous improvements while incorporating new insights from user feedback and evolving best practices.
A model for healthcare transformation What makes IWK Health’s accessibility journey significant is how it is reshaping organisational culture. The tangible changes in washroom design have initiated broader discussions about accessibility throughout the organisation. As Nova Scotia approaches its 2030
barrier-free goal, IWK Health strives to stand as a model for how healthcare institutions can lead accessibility transformation. IWK’s commitment extends across all operational areas: the built environment, education,

employment, goods and services, information and communications and transportation services.
The ripple effect The impact of IWK Health’s accessibility initiatives extends well beyond hospital walls. As a regional leader in research and knowledge sharing, the organisation’s approach to inclusive design influences other healthcare facilities and community organisations throughout the region. This work demonstrates that
accessibility is not about accommodation – it is about creating environments where everyone belongs from the start. When healthcare institutions prioritise
dignity and independence through thoughtful design, they do not just serve patients better; they model the kind of inclusive community that benefits everyone. In a world where healthcare can sometimes feel impersonal and overwhelming, IWK Health’s commitment to accessible design is a reminder that small changes in physical spaces can create profound improvements in human experience. IWK’s barrier free washrooms may be the most visible symbol of this commitment, but they represent something much larger – a healthcare system that is striving to truly see and serve every member of the community.
