Future Surgery 2024
l Supporting diversity in the workforce. l Working better together - mentoring and leadership in the future of surgery.
Innovation There will also be exciting insights into the latest technologies and innovation, with sessions covering: l Current and future genomics applications for surgeons.
l Everything you want to know about robotics and digital technology but were too afraid to ask.
l XR and the future of surgical training: establishing a global network of training XR hubs.
l Trends in Virtual Reality - can immersive tech help surgical precision and patient outcome?
l AI hype or hope? Getting real about the current and future role of AI in surgery
Patient safety Patient safety is another key issue that will be high on the agenda, and there will be some thought-provoking discussions on: l How to halve complications through effective perioperative care.
l When things go wrong: how best to support the team and learn from mistakes.
l Safety of medical technology - are we making data driven choices?
Day surgery As the NHS continues to tackle the backlog, the need to reduce the length of stay for patients and to optimise day surgery pathways has never been more important. With this in mind, the event will host a session on ‘promoting excellence and maximising delivery of UK day surgery’. This session will discuss the benefits of day
surgery, how to develop and implement effective day surgery pathways and how to overcome common barriers in the delivery of day surgery services. The challenges to providing effective day surgery services will be addressed and solutions to overcoming these will also be discussed. Finally, there will be a presentation from a leading national day surgery centre on the implementation of a day case pathway for complex surgery.
The Surgical
Simulation Theatre The Surgical Simulation Theatre will also showcase the latest in innovative technology and techniques being pioneered by leading surgeons. Replicating a fully working, state- of-the-art operating theatre, this theatre will display some of the UK’s best surgeons performing both live and simulated surgery. The theatre is supported by leading surgical sector suppliers, all showcasing their latest innovations.
‘Coffee with...’ networking sessions
Delegates will have the chance to network with leading voices from the surgical community in an informal and relaxed setting. An opportunity to grab a coffee and engage with senior leaders to hear their insights, ask for advice, find new opportunities, and make new connections in targeted networking sessions.
Key themes for 2024
l Disruptive Technology - discovering new products, devices and technologies that are revolutionising patient experience and care, including robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Augmented Reality.
l Global Health Innovation - shining a light on international case studies and innovations, with lessons from across the globe.
l Innovation in Surgery - sharing the latest innovations in processes, tools and techniques, including how to navigate the interface between professionals, industry and policy to progress ideas into everyday usage. l Working Better Together - exploring new
ways of working, employee wellbeing, teamwork, leadership, and the future workforce as well.
l Sustainability and the Green Practices - driving improvements in the surgical environment, waste reduction, efficiency and procurement.
l Patient Centred Care - exploring improvements in patient safety and experience.
l Perioperative Care - optimising the complete patient pathway, from referral to discharge, by collaborating with the entire multidisciplinary team on improving outcomes and patient experience.
Sustainability
Sustainability and the importance of tackling the impact of operating theatres on our planet will also be a central discussion theme at the event. The climate and ecological crisis is rapidly unfolding across the Earth with devastating consequences. As healthcare professionals we have to deal with the outcomes from this, but we are also responsible for almost 5% CO2e, and significant resources use, notably single- use items. Surgical teams need to find more sustainable ways of delivering care, and focus on those interventions that are of high quality in terms of patient outcome. A session on ‘Sustainability – protecting the future of our planet and our patients’, will explore the challenges and the way forward, bringing together key stakeholders, thought leaders and influencers, including: l Andrew Stevenson, Co-Chair Sustainability in Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons England.
l Victoria Pegna, Founding Member of Sustainability in Surgery, Royal College of Surgeons England.
l Katie Hurst, Chair, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh Trainees Committee and Sustainability Champions.
l Jasmine Winter-Beatty, Sustainability Champion, Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Commenting on the line-up for 2024, Barney Ridley, Content Lead for Future Surgery, said: “Join us and be at the forefront of surgical innovation. At this year’s show, we are bringing together the leading surgical minds to explore practical steps we can take today, to build the future of surgery tomorrow. Don’t just imagine the future of surgery – be a part of creating it.”
