Easy to Read Screen “The nurses told us they need to be able to take in the information easily, not struggle to see the key criteria on a screen filled with irrelevant data. So we designed the BD neXus screen so that it shows only critical information including drug name, the rate and the limit, in a font large enough to see from a distance.”

Colour Coding Richard also explained how they introduced a new simple colour coding system on the touch screen. “It provides key information about the infusion pump and the mode that it’s running in two colours: blue background for ml/hr and an orange background for Guardrails™. So, at a glance across a busy ward, you’re able to see which pumps are running in the protective protocol.”

l

Simplified Hand-Over “In the ICU, patients may require multiple infusions, so we have improved inter-pump communication and the handover mode to help minimise interruptions in delivery of critical drugs. When one pump is coming to the end of its infusion, it’s communicating to a second pump that is ready to automatically start, as the first pump finishes, maintaining a continuous infusion. A huge improvement compared to manual syringe changes.”

BD AlarisTM TM l Connectivity Improving workflow efficiency . BD AlarisTM

BD neXus Medication Safeware facilitates auto-documentation of infusion data in Electronic Medical Records (EMR) and Patient Data Management Systems (PDMS). It utilises Health Level 7 (HL7®) messaging and is conforming with the Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE™) PCD-01 and PCD- 10 transaction profiles, ensuring seamless integration and interoperability with existing healthcare systems.

neXus PK offers a user-friendly interface and a large display showing all critical infusion data at a glance.

The BD neXus platform has been designed with a high focus on security, ensuring the utmost protection of your personal data with robust encryption mechanisms to safeguard personal data both in storage and during transit.

Wireless transfer of infusion data through the AlarisTM Communication Engine to the hospital information systems. Automatic wireless download of pump event logs and the update of datasets from anywhere in the hospital improves the process without interrupting clinical workflows as pumps are infusing.

Richard concluded, “The ultimate role in product development is to distil functionality down to what really matters. Starting with the right device design can ensure that nurses can easily, quickly and intuitively use infusion pumps, helping to minimise the risk of errors and making it simple to perform complex tasks correctly, time after time.”
