World patient safety day
Driving patient and workforce safety
In the complex and ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, the emphasis on patient and healthcare worker safety has become increasingly paramount. September’s World Patient Safety Day serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of these issues. To mark this occasion, we delve into the work of the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) Patient Safety Group.
The ABHI is an industry association for health technology (HealthTech). Members, including large multinationals and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), supply products and services from syringes and wound dressings to in vitro diagnostics, surgical robots, and the delivery of remote care. The sector partners with the health and care system to save and enhance lives. Within ABHI, there are a number of member- led networks that address key issues impacting the sector and the healthcare services. This includes the ABHI Patient Safety Group, a cohort that is instrumental in identifying and implementing HealthTech innovations that enhance the safety of patients, healthcare workers and carers. The group includes a diverse membership
drawn from across the world of medical devices, diagnostics and digital health, ensuring a holistic and comprehensive approach to safety that transcends specific domains. By collaborating
closely with the NHS and other key players in the healthcare ecosystem, the group supports the implementation of the NHS Patient Safety Strategy, aiming to make safety innovations both accessible and effective.
The need for the ABHI Patient Safety Group The necessity of the ABHI Patient Safety Group stems from the multifaceted challenges faced by healthcare systems globally. The group’s mission is to address these challenges by fostering consistency in approach, evidence, and advocacy around patient, healthcare worker and carers safety. This effort is not only aimed at reducing risk of harm, and the prevention of harm to patients, healthcare workers and carers, but is also designed to maintain the reputation and efficiency of healthcare systems. Patient and workforce safety are the
linchpins of a functional and responsible healthcare system. The HealthTech industry has
a responsibility and accountability to respond to the challenges in the healthcare systems it operates within, showcasing best practices and sharing common themes. This sentiment highlights the critical role of the ABHI Patient Safety Group in driving improvements across the healthcare sector.
Collaboration is Key Collaboration is at the heart of the ABHI Patient Safety Group’s strategy. The group actively engages with various organisations to address patient safety issues comprehensively. By fostering partnerships, the group ensures that its proactive and reactive efforts are informed by diverse perspectives and expertise. It is also committed to a consistency in
approach and evidence, emphasising the importance of policy design and human factors in enhancing safety. This approach involves bringing successful case studies to the forefront, rather than merely focusing on remedial action plans. The HealthTech industry plays a critical
role in improving healthcare systems and reframing the narrative around device failures. By showcasing how technology can drive safety forward, the group aims to change perceptions and highlight the positive impact of HealthTech innovations. Leveraging the knowledge and expertise within this group and the ABHI wider network is fundamental to this work, and the group’s interactions with a broad range of stakeholders allows it to pull out themes such as policy, innovation, and adoption, ensuring a comprehensive approach to safety.
Current efforts and initiatives The ABHI Patient Safety Group is currently focusing on several key initiatives aimed at enhancing patient and workforce safety. One major area of focus is the integration of digital
