P RODUCT S Swabs to meet COVID-19 testing needs


In response to the increased demand for swabs, ALPHA LABORATORIES has sourced a wide range of options to cover a variety of needs. The Bioer nasopharyngeal swabs include a transport tube containing viral nucleic acid sample preservation fluid which rapidly inactivates virus particles


in the sample, to maximise the safety of front-line medical workers. The sample preservative fluid inhibits DNase / RNase activity to render the viral RNA stable for transportation and storage at room temperature and subsequent detection of viral nucleic acid. To help meet capacity, Government guidelines also allow use of alternative transport swabs for use in testing for COVID-19, including those with liquid Amies medium such as the company’s SW1050 swabs. These swabs are CE marked for IVD and conform to the MDD 93/42/EEC for Class IIa. Where necessary, transport swabs with no transport medium (such as the SW1010 dry swabs) can also be used.


Integrated operating theatre AV solutions


Integrated theatre AV technology has been added to the extensive portfolio of hospital solutions offered by Bender UK. The complete Merivaara OpenOR system is exclusively supplied and installed by BENDER UK in the UK and Ireland. The technology enables complete integration of all medical devices and image sources within the theatre environment and displays all images at near-zero latency (guaranteed at less than one frame) without resolution loss.


Merivaara OpenOR also allows procedures to be viewed and streamed outside the operating theatre, enabling clinicians and students to consult and view live surgeries from other locations such as a Lecture Hall.


This intuitive system has a user- friendly touch screen interface which allows control of image routing, medical device control, live streaming, as well as remote surgeon access to live and stored images, image capture and video recording and editing. Ultra-V Connect uses UV-C light to reduce harmful pathogens, including the SARS-CoV-2 pathogen which causes the COVID-19 virus, by up to >log5. Designed to be fixed to ceilings in busy healthcare environments, the Ultra-V Connect’s rapid-deployment, short cycle duration and enhanced safety measures make it ideal for use for spaces that need to be regularly decontaminated. Quick and energy efficient, the system is calibrated to decontaminate specific high-risk areas (such as high traffic touch points or specific patient equipment within the space it is fitted) between patients. Operators can be confident that each cycle has been successful, as the Ultra-V Connect provides a validation report at the end of a process to confirm that the pre-calibrated process has successfully removed pathogens in the area. Enhanced safety measures include operator cards for approved users only, as well as built- in safety sensors which immediately end the cycle when movement is detected.


Reducing risk of blood stream infections


Needleless connectors are recognised as sources for microbial contamination which can lead to bloodstream infections. Epic3 guidelines suggest that needleless connectors, such as injection ports and catheter hubs, should be disinfected using Chlorhexidine (CHG) in 70% Isopropyl alcohol before and after accessing the system. The PREVANTICS Swab2Hub sterile device contains a foam pad saturated with 2% CHG and 70% Isopropyl Alcohol. The

device provides friction to scrub and disinfect, removing microorganisms from the grooves and threads of needless connectors. Quick and easy to use; simply insert the needleless connector end into the cavity of the device, twist in circular movements for at least 30 seconds, then allow the needless access site to air dry for 30 seconds.
