Trevor Garcia, IDSc National Chairman

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome the delegates, presenters and exhibition industry colleagues to the Hilton Metropole Birmingham Hotel for our annual conference. This will be my first time attending as Chairman and I would like to thank all those involved in ensuring that the conference is a success. I would encourage all healthcare professionals that have

day-to-day operational responsibilities and those that have responsibilities for medical device decontamination to attend. This includes Infection Prevention and Control, Endoscopy, Dental, Nursing, in fact anyone that is involved in decontamination of medical devices and ensuring they know the latest standards and best practice. We have listened to the feedback from last year and moved to

a larger venue, so there will be easier access to the exhibition, and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage all delegates to ensure they visit our industry colleagues without whom the conference would not be possible. The programme allows for plenty of free time to visit the exhibition area, and it provides an opportunity to learn about new products and innovations, as well as to network with your fellow delegates. The plenary sessions will also give you an opportunity to ensure

you are up to date with the latest developments across a variety of subjects and to ask questions to the industry experts that you may not have the opportunity to ask in your day-to-day role,. This will ensure you get the full benefit of the conference. The subjects in the plenary sessions are those that our members have identified. Looking forward to the 2024 conference, we would welcome your ideas for topical subjects to cover. Please let us know now, as we will be starting planning immediately for the next event, after 2023 has finished. The conference is opening on Tuesday morning with the first

session providing an update on education and training. This will look at one of the recommendations following the Healthcare Safety Investigation Branch (HSIB) report issued in 2022. In Safety recommendation R/2022/195, HSIB recommends that NHS England and NHS Improvement develop a competency framework, stating skills, qualifications and professional registration as required, for all sterile services staff, which is included in Health Technical Memorandum 01-01. We will also have Janet Monkman, CEO of the Academy for Healthcare Science who will discuss the Academy’s role in

driving improvement and a representative from NHSE Estates and Facilities will discuss the lastest document being developed to address the safety recommendations. Helen Campbell will be updating the delegates on the new and exciting Endoscopy Technical Certificate and its planned launch. This will be followed by a discussion of Innovation. This

session will include a presentation by Doros Polydorou - Managing Director – EMEA, STERIS Instrument Management Services, who will look at how Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be used to complement the existing decontamination processes and how it could help to address staffing shortages. In the afternoon, the session will include a panel of experts who will be able to answer your questions. Panel members include: Andrew Bent, MHRA, Gillian Cairns, BSi Lead auditor, our own Darren Carter, with others to be confirmed. This session will be led by Sharon Fox. On Wednesday morning, the IDSc AGM will take place. The morning plenary session is dedicated to endoscopy and the changes in the methods we use to ensure that we are effective in the decontamination of flexible endoscopes. Meredith (Mett) Smart Owner and Research and Technical Director, 2030 Labs, will be presenting on the final phases of her research and looking at what methods are currently in the guidelines and whether there is a need for change. In the afternoon the plenary session includes a presentation

from Heidi Barnard, Head of Sustainability, NHS Supply Chain, whose role is to help organisations understand their sustainability impact, implementing strategies to empower their people to deliver on the NHS Net zero and Social Value agendas, and to address the impact of decontamination services. Completing the session is a further presentation regarding sustainability, in relation to the Design for Life project, which the IDSc is involved in. This potentially will have a significant impact on your day-to-day workload. Please ensure that you scan into each plenary session to

receive your CPD certificates. I look forward to meeting new attendees and old acquaintances at this unique event.
