Andrew Bent Andrew is the Lead assessor across the MHRA for decontamination and infection control of medical devices. He has worked for the agency since 2013 and has current responsibilities which include principal lead role sterilisation and decontamination safety, Andrew provides expert advice and direction to the regulatory affairs and safety and surveillance teams on compliance as well as working across wider government departments on vigilance. Andrew is a member of BSI Standards committee CH/198 sterilisation standards for equipment and CEN EN TC 204 committee with over 20 year’s experiential knowledge and experience and has worked in both NHS and private sector within the decontamination space for public and patient safety. Darren Carter Research Director IDSc Darren has had many years of experience in decontamination and in Pathology in the NHS and private sector. Darren is currently an Operations Manager with IHSS and has recently taken up the post of the IDSc Director of Research & Emerging Technologies.

John Prendergast John Prendergast is the Senior Decontamination Engineer working within the specialist team at NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership/Specialist Estates Services. His role is dedicated to all aspects of decontamination/reprocessing techniques of medical devices. John leads the team that provides validation services, advice and guidance to Health Boards/Trusts within Wales and works closely with Welsh governmental departments to deliver policy and strategy in this unique and often complex field. John has worked within the NHS in Wales for the past 37 years. In 2012 John completed the ACIST course (qualifying


course for Authorised Engineer - Decontamination) and was formally accepted onto the IHEEM register as an Authorised Engineer (Decontamination) late 2013. Disclaimer: John’s participation at this event is for educational purposes, discussions points raised is his own interpretation of best practise and technical guidance.


Meredith Smart Meredith is the owner and CEO of 20/30 labs in Northampton, she is also an Associate Lecturer University or Northampton. She has spent many years working in the decontamination industry and has used her skills as a microbiologist to research the testing and accepted the processes currently used. Sulisti Holmes Sulstisti is leading the Health Facilities Scotland’s Decontamination and IRIC (Incident Reporting Investigation Centre) remit in conjunction with and on behalf of the Scottish Government Health and Social Care. She is also the lead for working group 5 ‘Infrastructure and workforce’ which is part of the Design for life collaborative initiative between government, industry, the health and care sector, and academia to explore and identify practical actions that address the challenges of resource security and efficiency, supply resilience, net zero and single-use plastics facing medtech in the UK.

Heidi Barnard Head of Sustainability NHS Supply Chain Heidi’s role is to help organisations understand their sustainability impact, implementing strategies to empower their people to deliver on the NHS Net zero and Social Value agendas.


Heidi has worked in this field for 17 years, she has


experience in developing Resource action plans with DEFRA, collaborating with various Govt depts, implemented companywide ISO Management systems, sat on, and chaired various sustainability focus groups within trade bodies, nationally, internationally, and most importantly manages, develops, coaches and mentors’ teams to deliver on their own aspirations.
