A new era of digital transformation
The current speed of technology innovation in healthcare is astounding – technologies such as artificial intelligence are set to transform cancer detection; robots are transforming surgery; and virtual reality is helping the next generation of surgeons to gain the fundamental skills to ensure they are both safe and proficient in the operating theatre.
Digital solutions are helping to implement effective prehabilitation programmes, to ensure patients are optimised for surgery, while mobile phone technology can be used to monitor the healing of their wounds post-surgery, ensuring surgical site infections are quickly identified and treated. The government has recently pledged its support for a digital pathology screening programme that will help make the detection of breast, bowel and cervical cancer quicker and more effective. Indeed, at every stage of the patient’s journey, digital solutions are guiding, analysing, informing, and recording healthcare delivery, to ensure the best possible patient outcomes. These are exciting times indeed. This latest edition of CSJ focuses on some of these important developments and offers an insight into the ways in which technology is helping to ensure safer, more efficient, cost- effective care. The cover story, this month, outlines how cutting-edge solutions can facilitate seamless data collection, enhance clinical standards, and expand diagnostic capabilities even in non-clinical settings. Data is key to effective clinical decision making – from better intelligence to aid faster responses in trauma scenarios, to patient monitoring throughout the care pathway, and on ‘virtual wards’. Robotic surgery is also seeing rapid expansion. An exclusive interview with the co-founder
of CMR Surgical reveals how robot-assisted surgery is predicted to be the “biggest MedTech growth area in history”, enabling more people to benefit from minimally invasive surgery – thereby reducing the risk of infection and enabling faster recovery for patients. Also on the horizon is the development of nanobots. Researchers worldwide have devoted themselves to the research and development of cancer-killing nanorobots and their work is “beginning to bear fruit”, according to Chu Canh Chieu, who writes in this month’s issue. He reveals how nanobots could be programmed to diagnose and cure contagious diseases, ingest plaque that has built up in the arteries, or to administer a variety of medications. These are just some of the many applications being explored. Wearable technologies are enabling patients to take charge of their health, while opening
up a new era in the management of conditions such as diabetes. Digitalised blood glucose monitoring systems can streamline diabetes care for those living with the condition. This edition discusses how automated data analysis can reduce workload and enable healthcare providers to prioritise patients based on their health needs. This has the potential to improve patient flow, clinic capacity, and efficiency. Radiologists are also using AI to help detect cancer and research in this field is gathering
pace. The LungIMPACT trial, for example, is currently evaluating technology which is designed to spot potential abnormalities on chest X-rays. The AI system aims to flag patients that would benefit from an urgent review of their scan by a radiographer, who can arrange for a same-day CT scan. Ultimately, the plethora of digital technologies shaping the future of healthcare is growing rapidly. Effective and safe adoption will depend on some key factors: adequate resources and investment, interoperability, participation in clinical research and the collection of PROMs data, regulation where appropriate, and a strategic approach to ensure the foundation blocks and IT infrastructure are in place to support successful implementation.
