a sustainable approach. Patient safety and high-quality clinical care have always been the bedrocks of our specialty. Consideration of the environmental impact of our clinical practice is rapidly (and laudably) becoming the third bedrock of anaesthesia. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made as a specialty, and we’ll continue to help the NHS lead the way.

About the author
Dr. Paul Southall is an elected Council Member of the Royal College of Anaesthetists and an Environmental Advisor to the College. He is a Consultant Anaesthetist with over 15 years of experience, having qualified from Medical School in 2008 and completed anaesthetic training through the Birmingham School of Anaesthesia. Dr. Southall has clinical expertise in major urological surgery, day case anaesthesia, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. He is deeply committed to advancing sustainability in healthcare and promoting wellbeing. He serves on the MMD Board, the SAS Committee, and the Ethics Committee at the RCoA.
