Perioperative practice

encouraging words might seem small, but it can be huge for the other person. Kindfulness is like mindfulness, but “with a dash of added kindness”. David shared with delegates a few “kindfulness practices” and explained how kindfulness turns down stress regions of the brain, turns up positive mood regions, boosts cardiovascular health, supports the immune system, and can positively impact the lives of those around you. Equally compelling was Melissa Mead, UK

Sepsis Trust Ambassador and Spokesperson, who spoke to delegates about her campaign to raise awareness of sepsis. Following the death of her son William, who lost his life to sepsis just after his first birthday in December 2014, Melissa has worked tirelessly, giving talks, attending conferences, appearing on national TV and even creating an awareness-raising video seen by millions of people. Her powerful account was a moving reminder to all those working in healthcare of the importance of listening to parents’ concerns. Williams tragic case highlights a desperate need to raise awareness of the symptoms of sepsis – not just among the public, but to also encourage health professionals to ‘think sepsis’.

Roadshows The AfPP has also celebrated its 60th Anniversary with a Roadshow which took place in seven UK cities – the last of these is set to take place in Leeds on the 7th December, which will cover a wide variety of hot topics – from: Overcoming Challenges in Theatre - Achieving “The Perfect Day” and ‘Sustainable Perioperative Practice’ , through to Inclusive Intercultural Communication Skills and Care Bundle Interventions In the Perioperative Environment. 2025 Events

Building on the huge success of its 60th Anniversary year, AfPP is hosting a range of events throughout 2025 aimed at advancing the skills and knowledge of perioperative professionals across the UK. The Annual National Conference serves as

the largest event, bringing together industry leaders, experts, and practitioners for keynotes, workshops, and networking. The AfPP 2025 Annual National Conference is taking place at the University of Warwick from Friday 8th to Saturday 9th August 2025. There will be over 500 highly engaged delegates in attendance over the two days. For 2025, AfPP is introducing a series of new

one-day Regional Conferences which are taking place throughout the year. Each conference will feature a programme of speakers and exhibitors, and it is anticipated that there will be 100-150 delegates in attendance at each. These events will cover regional topics and pain points. A series of Webinars and Online Workshops will provide flexible, accessible education on

specialised topics. Brand new for 2025 are two prestigious

Symposium events featuring industry-leading speakers and subject-specific exhibitors. These events will be held in-person in key UK locations and focus on current trends and future innovations. They will deliver insights that are critical for anyone looking to elevate their practice and improve patient outcomes in the rapidly evolving world of perioperative care. You can find more details about all these

events on the AfPP website: https://www.afpp. org.uk/events/

Continuing Daisy’s legacy by supporting new practitioners

The Association further celebrated its 60th year by announcing that perioperative students will now be given free membership. This will be alongside a Newly Qualified Member (NQM) rate of £72 for the first year after graduating, which comes with all the benefits of full registered membership. “This heavily discounted rate gives additional support to newly-qualified practitioners at the start of their careers,” Alex Duke, CEO of AfPP, explained. Ruth Collins, AfPP President, added: “This is a

fabulous offer for students to become part of AfPP while studying and be supported to become

the best perioperative practitioner they can be, with all the member benefits available to them.” “AfPP has been celebrating its 60th anniversary this year, and we want to support as many students as we can through the new Free Student Membership Scheme,” said Ruth, adding: “Membership of AfPP is open to everyone working in or around the perioperative environment across the NHS and independent sector. It provides you with the tools you need to be the best practitioner you can be, and you are guaranteed to find everything you need to be a patient safety advocate and advance in your role.”
