Tim Kay Director - Science and Technology

The focus on life sciences and healthcare globally has never been greater and that is certainly the case here in the UK. Life sciences is a strategic priority for this Government and seen to be a sector that can help realise a more innovative economy and promote economic growth. We are working to take UK Life Sciences to new heights, ensuring that the UK is a global leader for innovation and investment, and is prepared to export cutting edge solutions to the world. The UK’s MedTech sector is a key part of this ambition. The Department for Business and Trade (DBT)

was formed earlier this year, merging the Department for International Trade (DIT) and the business support elements of the Department of Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). We support businesses to invest, grow and export, creating jobs and opportunities across the country. The bringing together of these two departments means businesses now have a single front door to UK government, with levers to provide support not just domestically but internationally. The UK is a global hotspot for MedTech

innovation. The industry is comprised of over 4,000 UK businesses, over 84% of which are SMEs, with an annual turnover of £30 billion in 2021. MedTech represents 32% of all turnover in the UK life sciences sector. In 2022, UK MedTech exports were valued at £4.1 billion with DBT playing a critical role in enabling companies achieve growth through internationalisation. Since January, we have supported and engaged with hundreds of MedTech companies providing them with 1:1 support, enabling their presence at international trade shows, access

to webinars and support from our UK and overseas network. These activities are our way of showcasing UK companies on the global stage, providing a platform for them to understand the local market, access opportunities and meet key stakeholders. The DBT is thrilled once again to be highlighting

UK MedTech capability at Medica 2023 in Düsseldorf. You can find us at H03, Hall 16 and we look forward to welcoming you to our pavilion. The DBT UK pavilion will host our commercial officers from 12 different countries, who are available to speak to UK companies about their markets and opportunities for export. The DBT UK pavilion will also host an exciting delegation of companies from across the UK, including from our regions and nations, looking to display their pioneering products and bring their innovation to the global marketplace. There is a diverse range of UK activity taking place across the week, celebrating the UK’s vibrant MedTech sector, with a range of opportunities for business-to-business collaboration and engagement with global business and organisations. In the next few pages, you can read about the UK’s strengths in assistive technology, a crucial sub- sector that enables people to live independent and prosperous lives, as well as our regional spotlights which outline the strengths of the MedTech sector across our English regions. We look forward to welcoming you to the UK Pavilion at Medica in November.
