The Department for Business and Trade (DBT) are excited to bring a delegation of companies from the North of England, also known as the Northern Powerhouse, to Medica 2023. The mission offers unique opportunities to build ties with key decision makers and innovators around the world for delegates and buyers alike. The Northern Powerhouse is the UK government’s


vision for a super-connected, globally competitive northern economy with a flourishing private sector and highly skilled population ready to take its place on the world stage. It brings together people from across the North of England, encompassing the cities of Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Hull and Newcastle to create a fast-growing economy, accounting for £412 billion GDP, nearly 20% of the total UK GDP and exports of goods and services valued at over £88 billion. The Northern Powerhouse is well known for its


world leading creativity and design industries and its heritage of manufacturing know-how is delivering global innovative products. Life sciences, energy, financial services, digital, advanced manufacturing and engineering are just some of the other areas where the North excels. Supported by high-speed rail links, excellent transport connections, seven international gateway airports and 12 major foreign trading ports the region has great freight, logistics and transport links to all global markets. The healthcare and the life sciences sectors are


some of most dynamic and productive sectors in the Northern economy and the UK. The region has one of the largest clusters of orthopaedic, medical device and surgical companies in the UK and home to many innovative and ground-breaking companies. There are specific sub sectors in which the region is leading the way internationally and offers powerful opportunities including precision medicine, clinical trials , medical and health technologies , bio and pharma manufacturing,

health informatics and digital health , and infectious diseases. The North has many centres of excellence, including: the home of wonder material graphene in Manchester; a centre of excellence in precision medicine in Leeds; the School of Tropical Medicine in Liverpool; the Institute for Ageing in Newcastle; and one of the UK’s largest medical devices clusters in Sheffield. The Northern Powerhouse’s life sciences sectors unite a wealth of world-class expertise and business talent. It is also home to the N8 research partnership, which includes the Universities of Durham, Newcastle, York, Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Lancaster coming together to promote deeper collaboration between universities, business and society, establish innovative research capabilities, programmes of national and international prominence and to drive economic growth by generating income, supporting jobs and new businesses.
