WALES

This is Life Sciences. This is Wales.

There are many reasons why doing business in Wales gives you a distinct advantage – from skills to strategic partnerships, and a tailored approach to support.

Agile countries like ours think a little differently to the mainstream. It’s a place where our business ecosystems are closely interlinked, supporting each other to drive new ideas forward. Industry, academia and the Welsh Government work together to make things happen. We have the right business support and the agility to make decisions quickly. Although we’re a close community here, we’re also proud to be citizens of the world and are well connected to the rest of the UK and to global markets. The Life Sciences sector currently employs

more than 12,000 people, in almost 300 companies with an industry turnover of £2.6bn in Wales. With world-leading academic expertise and a central Life Sciences Hub, Wales demonstrates a strong competitive advantage in Medtech, Diagnostics, Wound Healing, Neurosciences, Genomics and Cell Therapy and is already creating a world-leading Precision Medicine ecosystem, which includes academics, the NHS, Government and centres of excellence. 75% of the life sciences market is export focussed with Welsh companies supplying their products and services to markets all around the World from Spain and Ireland, to Canada, Brazil, Qatar and Singapore. Wales offers specific opportunities for

companies to develop and commercialise new or disruptive technologies. We make it easy for industry to collaborate with our National Health Service (NHS) clinicians and universities to move research projects towards market readiness. Our

independent, devolved NHS allows companies access to anonymised healthcare data for the whole population in one database. So, clinical trials here can access three million people with a single, co-ordinated permissions process. We’re committed to supporting innovative technologies and therapies to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes. Wales also has competitive strengths in the enabling technologies that underpin digital innovation in healthcare, namely Cyber Security, big data analytics, AI and the world’s first compound semi-conductor cluster. The Life Sciences Hub Wales, based in

Cardiff, is the focal point for NHS and industry engagement. An arm’s length body of Welsh Government, the Life Sciences Hub Wales exists to facilitate innovation and collaboration between industry, health, social care, and academia – making a positive difference to people and businesses across the nation. Health and Care Research Wales has been established to provide a one stop source of information and support for companies wishing to undertake clinical research in Wales. Working together with government agencies and research funders (both in Wales and across the UK). Promoting research into diseases, treatments, services and outcomes that can lead to discoveries and innovations which can improve and even save people’s lives.
