THE MIDLANDS
The Midlands: The Engine Room of the United Kingdom
Located in the centre of the United Kingdom, the Midlands is both the heartbeat and the engine-room of the nation’s economy. The region hosts one of the most important life sciences ecosystems in the UK with more than 1,200 life science companies operating in the region. The Midlands has a diverse and growing MedTech
sector backed by world-leading research institutions and large teaching hospitals. It is the region of choice for a mixture of start-ups, scale ups and established businesses with a first-class university ecosystem to support companies. In addition, it is also one of the country’s first 5G testbeds, enabling 5G technology testing for health applications. The Midlands has a rich industry network,
providing support, guidance and connections to help companies grow. It is home to two of the UK Life Science Opportunity Zones – Birmingham Health Innovation Campus and Charnwood Campus. The Medical Technologies Innovation Facility is a pioneering research and development centre specialising in the acceleration of new healthcare products and services, ranging from bench to bedside, across two sites in Nottingham. Birmingham is also home to the West Midlands
Innovation Accelerator in Health Technologies, a government funded programme to support the development and delivery of diagnostics and devices to the patient and the marketplace through creating viable businesses. To integrate this academic and clinical expertise in health data, digital health, devices and diagnostics, the Birmingham Health Innovation Campus (BHIC) has been developed. BHIC will enhance the health ecosystem and be a centre for precision medicine, innovative clinical trials, diagnostic and device development, and home to research driven life science companies, all underpinned by unrivalled access to health data and the power to harness this for the benefit of patients worldwide. Data-driven health innovation will improve early

intervention and enable the creation of tailored therapies. When combining the regions commercial power with its strengths in world-leading academic and clinical data, digital, diagnostics, and devices, the Midlands region is a great place to develop innovative patient-centred healthcare solutions and bring them to market. In 2023, the DBT Midlands region will once again be bringing a trade mission to Medica, including Spirit Health, who will be part of the UK delegation having successfully participated last year. Chris Barker, CEO of Spirit Health and Co-Founder
of Clinitouch, commented: “Following our attendance at Medica last year, we’re now in conversations with several international partners who are excited and ready to make an impact with remote patient monitoring technology, powered by our Clinitouch platform and global reseller programme. Working closely with our colleagues at DBT,
we were able to set up proactive meetings with potential partners, identifying opportunities where our technology could make a difference to their local healthcare customers. Within just a few months, we’ve signed up 10 international resellers who are now introducing our product to their respective territories. DBT’s support has been invaluable throughout our
international journey so far. We’re looking forward to visiting Medica again to foster even more partnerships and strengthen relationships with existing ones.”
