AHSNs: Connecting International HealthTech innovators with the NHS
Innovation is essential in overcoming the challenges the NHS faces with an ageing population, increasing demand for healthcare and constrained resources. As the collective voice of the 15 Academic
Health Science Networks (AHSNs) across England, the AHSN Network has a central role to play to meet these challenges. Established by NHS England in 2013, AHSNs accelerate the adoption and spread of health innovation into the NHS, improving care for our patients and creating economic growth. The AHSNs support HealthTech international
SMEs who are interested in expanding into the UK to help establish their business and understand the UK healthcare ecosystem. Likewise, our close partnership with organisations such as the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) and the Department of International Trade means we can also help UK innovators to showcase their solutions to a global market. Recently the Yorkshire & Humber AHSN,
as an example to illustrate the breadth of the AHSNs’ work, has welcomed three cohorts of HealthTech SMEs from the US, Canada and the Nordic territories to our international Boot Camp, an initiative that builds on our successful digital accelerator programme Propel@YH. The international Boot Camp is a UK-based one-week programme of intensive support and masterclass content to understand how to import and sell products and services into the UK healthcare market. To date, the Propel@YH programme and international Boot Camps have provided 127 hours of support to 44 SMEs. This year for the first time, we took the Boot Camp overseas to India for a taster and received 148 applications from innovators interested in taking part in the programme. By partnering with organisations such as ABHI,
MEDICA 2023
we were able to showcase the pioneering work of the National Centre for Child Health Technology in Sheffield as part of the ABHI’s US Accelerator programme. The centre was one of the 30 UK HealthTech innovators to successfully secure a place on the programme, that helps to introduce them to key stakeholders across some of the largest healthcare systems in the States. We can also provide companies with the
opportunity to exhibit products and services at leading health technology fairs, such as Arab Health, the largest healthcare and medical trade show in the Middle East and North Africa region. Footfall at the show is estimated at between 90k and 100k people a day for the four days and Arab Health is estimated to drive around £700 million of global business each year directly as a result of the show. This year, it was great to see that the West Yorkshire region was once again strongly represented by some outstanding local healthcare business and the local West Yorkshire Combined Authority team led by the West Yorkshire Mayor, Tracy Brabin. If you are an international HealthTech innovator
interested in accessing the UK market or an overseas healthcare system who wants to learn more about our NHS system and innovations that are already having an impact on patient outcomes and service delivery, we would love to hear from you.
