Foreword Inspiring engineering innovators in

the future of healthcare delivery Alison Ryan CEng, MSc, BSc, FIHEEM, MCIBSE – President, IHEEM

Welcome to the 2024 IHEEM Handbook - a comprehensive guide to the UK’s leading independent professional institute for the healthcare sector. The handbook serves as a vital

resource for healthcare professionals, engineers, estate managers, and all those dedicated to advancing the quality of healthcare facilities, offering best practice guidance and inspiration for those engaged in the design, construction, operation, and maintenance of healthcare environments. In addition to detailing IHEEM's role and

structure, the handbook includes a directory of Company Affiliates, IHEEM Registered Authorising Engineers, Technical Platforms, and Branches. Last year we celebrated the 80th Anniversary

of the Institute and the 25th Anniversary of the IHEEM Hong Kong Branch. Since its establishment back in 1943, IHEEM has continuously evolved with the changing healthcare landscape. It has played an integral role in bridging the gap between engineering and healthcare, ensuring that advances in technology and innovation are

seamlessly integrated into the healthcare environment. Our membership includes healthcare

leaders, NHS estates managers, engineers, consultants, tradespeople, students, apprentices and professionals from

various sectors. IHEEM’s overall membership continues to grow, and we are receiving a record number of enquiries and applications, demonstrating the value, and wealth of knowledge and expertise, that we provide. As President, one of my goals is to inspire the

engineering innovators of the future. I am dedicated to supporting our members' professional development through IHEEM's resources, and continue to raise awareness of the crucial roles in Estates and Facilities Management, by promoting the sector to younger generations through school events and encouraging members to become STEM ambassadors. Healthcare delivery is a global concern, and IHEEM

has extended its collaboration and knowledge exchange efforts beyond national borders. By fostering partnerships with international organisations, participating in global conferences, and sharing best practices, IHEEM is contributing to global standards, addressing global challenges, developing new policies, and learning from international experiences. Ultimately, we’re ensuring that healthcare built environments are being designed to support evolving care models, patient safety, sustainability, and infection control. The future of healthcare delivery

emphasises the importance of collaborative care models involving multiple disciplines. As an institute, IHEEM is fostering collaboration among engineers, architects, clinicians, IT
