Selecting the right filter for the right outlet

T-safe, the Danish-headquartered point- of-use filter manufacturer, has launched a new initiative entitled ‘The Right Filter for the Right Outlet’, aimed at guiding NHS estates personnel through the key considerations for selecting suitable POU filters to overcome compatibility challenges which can impact waterborne pathogen infection prevention and control.

The company said: “The myriad of tap outlet and basin styles used in healthcare facilities presents a real challenge to installing suitable and compatible filters in a timely manner in response to water safety emergencies. This can result in: n a delay in filters being installed – exposing patients to unnecessary risk.

n installation of filters that impede tap outlet usability, such as effective handwashing.

n incompatibility that reduces the efficacy of the filter as a control measure, by breaching the air gap or increasing splashing risk. “A ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach to installing filters is not a practical or effective solution.” To address this, T-safe has developed a range of tap filters, each with specific tap compatibility criteria, and bespoke adapters, that enables NHS estates teams to choose the right filter for the right outlet – ‘putting end-user safety and compliance first’. This range includes:

A chance to get together and celebrate

As I write, exhibitors at this year’s Healthcare Estates event, speakers who addressed some of the day’s most pressing issues, and show visitors, have just returned from Healthcare Estates 2023 in Manchester. Few, if any other UK events are so specifically geared toward the healthcare engineering and estate management community, and focus so keenly on the key issues personnel working in the sector face. Te event is also a great opportunity to share news, experiences, and lessons, to make new contacts, and renew existing ones, and, of course, to do business. With IHEEM marking its 80th anniversary

T-safe says choosing the ‘right filter for the right tap outlet’ is a critical consideration, as compatibility significantly impacts a filter’s performance, the outlet usability, and how end-users interact with it. To aid the selection of suitable tap filters, T-safe offers a free-to-use guide, complete with a compatibility quick reference table, incorporating all major tap brands.

MD, Stephen McCreanor, said: “At T-safe we recognise and understand the complexities, risks, and nuances associated with water safety in high- risk healthcare environments. When designing this new range of products, our goal was to provide practical solutions that not only optimise outlet usability and end-user experience, but crucially, products that are complementary to wider infection prevention and control practices.”

November 2023 Health Estate Journal 5

this year, the Institute held a celebratory evening at Manchester’s Science & Industry Museum on the night before Healthcare Estates 2023 opened (see page 7), while the following night, well over 600 guests were able to celebrate excellence and innovation at the Healthcare Estates IHEEM Awards (pages 37-42). In all 12 awards were presented – in categories ranging from Staff Wellbeing of the Year, and Diversity and Inclusion, to Estates and Facilities Champion of Champions and Apprentice of the Year. Te contribution and commitment to both the wider sector and IHEEM of the Chair of the Institute’s Hong Kong Branch, Dr PL Yuen, saw him receive the IHEEM Lifetime Achievement Award, and indeed a number of members of the Branch had travelled from Hong Kong to see him thus honoured. In fact, on 3 November the Hong Kong

Branch marked its own 25th anniversary with a symposium themed ‘Hospital engineering design in the new era of environmental and technological development’, and a celebratory dinner, at the Hotel ICON in Tsim Sha Tsui, southern Kowloon. Among the guests were former IHEEM CEO, Julian Amey, and IHEEM’s President, Alison Ryan. Talking of the current President, Alison gave a short but heartfelt address at the IHEEM Awards Dinner about being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma aged 30, and her subsequent recovery; she went on to introduce Professor John Radford, President of Lymphoma Action, the evening’s charity partner. Discussing its work, he explained that the charity has been supporting those with Lymphoma, the UK’s fiſth most common cancer, for 35 years. I hope you enjoy this issue,

and to all those involved in this year’s flagship IHEEM event, congratulations for making it what many agreed was the best Healthcare Estates to date.
