IHEEM HEALTHCARE ESTATES 2021 AWARDS


West Heath Hospital, worked with an external landlord to produce fit-for- purpose accommodation for our clinical community teams at Gee House, relocated approximately 200 staff – ensuring alignment with Trust clinical services and local commissioning strategies, implemented a room-booking system for Trust wide-use, ensured that all CAD plans were accurate and up to date, carried out an asset capture survey on operational sites, and delivered £1 m of cost improvement projects.”


‘An outstanding year’ for Barnsley team


The winning entry from The Estates & Facilities Management Team at Barnsley Hospital said it had had ‘an outstanding year’ in 2020/21. The Estates Team delivered over £22 m of capital works to plan, despite the pandemic’s impact on working practices, contractor availability, and scarcity of supplies. It added: “The Facilities Team has gone over and above to support the hospital, opting to become multi-skilled workers and take up roles in other departments. For example, porters became part of the Material Management Team, and decontamination technicians worked as domestics on wards. Our linen room team used their skills to manufacture scrubs and gowns. The team’s work in the last year has seen patient care standards maintained, and increased patient choice – all done with passion, humour, and pride.” Examples of activity had included: n Building a new Children’s ED and Assessment Unit.


n Additional site-wide oxygen supplies, and developing an associated monitoring system.


n Rapid escalation of ICU services to Wards 31/32.


n ‘Hot and Cold’ ED / Green & Amber pathways for theatres.


n Management of PPE — including establishing new systems, emergency store, increased frequency of stock checks, and staff transitioning quickly into seven-day services.


The Barnsley Facilities Services Estates & Facilities Management team was one of four EFM teams shortlisted for the closely fought Estates & Facilities Team of the Year Award, but emerged as the winner.


n Essential ward moves. n Medical and surgical equipment requirements and procurement.


n Fast-paced delivery of additional staff (domestics and portering).


n Gown manufacture. n A free car park offer. n Financial tracking systems for COVID- 19-related spend.


The entry added: “The team has been repeatedly praised by the Trust Governors and Executive Team, as instrumental to its stability during the pandemic, and was recognised by Barnsley County Council as ‘Barnsley Spirit’ award-winners for the impact of its work supporting the Barnsley community. An independent HSE inspection of the team’s work during COVID saw it hailed as a ‘beacon’ example, and ranked the Trust in the top five performers in the country.”


Consultancy of the Year


The evening’s penultimate award, for Consultancy of the Year, saw four companies shortlisted:


n Curtins. n Currie & Brown. n One Creative Environments (ONE). n WSP UK.


Highly Commended was WSP, but the winner was Curtins. Its entry said: “We are a leading consultancy in the healthcare sector with innovative approaches to new-builds, site masterplanning, ward and emergency department refurbishments, and the dormitory eradication programme in the mental health sector. Curtins is working on some of the UK’s most complex healthcare schemes, including the £50 m Midland Metropolitan Hospital, and two of the ‘front-running’ six projects in the Health Infrastructure Programme. With projects valued at £10,000-£500 million+, and a £1 bn masterplan, we have relationships with over 50 NHS Trusts. One of the biggest issues facing their existing estates is extensive backlog maintenance liabilities, as well as poor sustainability performance, and RAAC buildings.
