INSTITUTE NEWS Individual and corporate memberships are up

Throughout the pandemic IHEEM’s Head Office team has been working hard to support members by sharing knowledge, guidance, and information, both nationally and internationally. This, alongside the improved offer published back in January 2020, has resulted in a 7% increase in membership in both individual and corporate members, the first time an increase has been reported since Tania Davies became IHEEM Chief Operating Officer. She said: “I am delighted to see that we are still gaining a steady flow of members in this current climate. We have been working hard over the past 18 months to update our IT infrastructure – including an improved membership application process, our new bespoke MyIHEEM CPD logging system created with feedback directly from some of our members, and dedicated support with our Engineering Council registration. I think this is all very positive news for both new and current members, and we hope people can see these active improvements.” She continued: “The pandemic has had such a huge impact across the healthcare built environment sector,

and while this growth level is unexpected, it is greatly appreciated.”

Additional updates and improvements have seen the launch of a new user- friendly website, including a simplified ‘one-stop-shop’ application process across all membership types. The new IHEEM Knowledge Portal is a digital library designed to provide the Institute’s members with the opportunity to easily access a wide range of professional content and material to support the strategic and operational management of healthcare facilities and services. An improved automated billing and payments process directly linking to the accounts package has revolutionised what used to be a manual and time-consuming process procedure.

Tania Davies said: “To support our registered Authorising Engineers, we have automated the renewals process, are providing photographic identity cards, and have trademarked the IHEEM- registered Authorising Engineers logos for their use. We’re also pleased to report the investment in our future leaders – the Career Route Map jointly developed with HEFMA sets out several key long-term objectives to support all members in their

career development across the many and varied roles within the sector. “In response to the mandatory requirements for those professionally registered to undertake continuing professional development (CPD), we have developed our own CPD application, allowing for easy capture and recoding of learning outcomes from members’ CPD activity.” Launched as part of the 2021 Healthcare Estates conference, all individual IHEEM members that have access to the system will be able to scan a QR code, automatically registering them as present at the session within their own CPD record, alongside opening up a link which will enable them to complete their learning outcomes live. Tania Davies added: “We will continue to listen to and work with our members to support their goals and needs. We are always happy to talk to anyone that may have ideas about how we can continuously improve the Institute for the leaders of now and tomorrow.”

Preventing infection spread through innovative ventilation

Specialist in infection prevention and control and associated ventilation solutions in healthcare environments, StarnIPC, has become an IHEEM Company Affiliate Member.

The Dundee-headquartered company says it has ‘a proven track record of installing infection prevention and control products which rapidly increase capacity, reduce fallow time, and help mitigate associated infections within dental and clinical facilities’.

Completed projects include the complete overhaul of the HVAC system within a maternity theatre, the installation of portable ante-rooms within Accident & Emergency Departments and High Dependency Units at multiple NHS sites, and the installation of its bespoke SafeClinic systems within dental hospitals, ‘allowing the resumption of in-person learning’. StarnIPC adds: “SafeCleanse air scrubbing units have also allowed private dental practices throughout the UK to significantly increase patient footfall.” Systems include:

n StarnIPC SafeRoom – a portable ante- room (airlock entrance) system with HEPA- filtered ventilation which can convert existing rooms into negative pressure isolation rooms.

n StarnIPC SafeClinic – a standalone temporary negative pressure isolation pod with airlock door. In addition to isolating infectious patients, the SafeClinic can be used to allow Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGPs) to be conducted safely, either inside or outside existing medical facilities.

n StarnIPC SafeCleanse – a ‘low-cost, small footprint, and high-impact’ air scrubbing unit which helps limit infection spread in rooms where no air changes would normally occur. It achieves a minimum of 10 air changes / hour.

The company adds: “Temporary installations can be constructed using a PVC outer skin material supported with steel framing that allows for fast deployment in challenging situations. Semi-permanent/permanent installations are constructed using clear and

opaque polycarbonate walls to maximise natural light into the area for observation. The walls are supported with modular aluminium framing, minimising installation time and disruption to the surrounding area. Hoardfast (standard and fire- retardant) is also available, featuring wipeable walls to maximise privacy and ease of cleaning, and large windows to allow natural light.” Airlocks are optional for all three systems.

StarnIPC can also offer ventilation overhauls to SHTM 03-01 standards, clean air validation services, and HVAC balancing. Marketing manager, Charlie Hadden, said of the business’s reasons for joining IHEEM: “As relative newcomers to the healthcare sector, we were seeking the assistance of an independent organisation to provide guidance and introductions to relevant stakeholders in key decision- making roles when we were introduced to IHEEM by a local NHS Estates Manager. On further investigation, we determined that in addition to offering us guidance, IHEEM could also provide us with significant networking opportunities, and the ability to attend various exhibitions, increasing brand awareness and furthering knowledge of our products within the industry.”
