ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING

networks of cities, the Scottish healthcare model, the healthcare strengthening model in several countries worldwide, and the ‘Guided Care’ Model (a Structured Approach to Providing Comprehensive Primary Care for Complex Patients, conceived by researchers at John Hopkins University in the US in 2001, and licensed to healthcare systems), PACE (in Singh & Ham, 2006).3

The goal of a Thematic Network The goal of an effective Thematic Network is to identify individuals representing connected centres as points that create shorter paths between users interested in a particular approach. Within the global system of air traffic control network hubs, for example, there exists a model dubbed ‘Hub & Spoke’ – based around the principle of one or more central airports (‘hubs’), from which passengers can make connections to their final destinations (‘spokes’). This particular model is used across much of the world, and allows the optimal use of the aircraft fleet, providing air service to a larger geographic area and with more destination options from a large city.

In the social sciences, the term ‘networks’ often refers to the component of interdisciplinarity based on approaches from sociology, social psychology, and anthropology, according to Silvia Portugal in a study by the Centre for Social Studies of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra.4

The author,

however, emphasises that these limits related to social sciences can be significantly expanded, increasingly reaching other scientific and technical domains.

Thematic Network proposal The Thematic Network of Continuous Operation of the IFHE Latin America Regional Group is based on these conceptual references and, at the same time, proposes to extend its interest to the exchange of experiences and reflections throughout the Latin American continent. The results obtained will later be shared

Objectives

Focusing on the specific interests of the Thematic Network of Continuous Functioning coordinated by the IFHE Latin America Regional Group related to

healthcare architecture and engineering, the following will be the Network’s main goals and objectives: n Sharing of technical and scientific information, in addition to sharing of specific project experiences on each theme and respective Group.

n Providing information from and to each national association, a process co-
