TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT Updates

Judging underway for IHEEM’s Big Bang Special Award April saw a busy month for the IHEEM Big Bang Programme Group, as a shortlisting process took place to whittle down a staggering 41 long listed entries for the IHEEM Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering Award to just five finalists.

The panel carefully assessed an exceptionally high standard of entries from young people aged 11-18, offering creative solutions to a diverse range of pressing solutions affecting healthcare users. The final judging round of the IHEEM Special Award, as part of the Big

Bang Competition, will take place later this month, with all finalists to be interviewed on 12 May by a select panel of James Chadwick (IHEEM East Midlands Branch Chair and Council Representative), Simon Adamson (IHEEM President-Elect), and Stephen Heape (IHEEM Environmental Advisory Platform Chair).

The winner of the IHEEM Innovation in Wellbeing and Healthcare Engineering Award will be announced on the first day of the Big Bang Fair, 17 June 2025, receiving a trophy and a £500 prize. They will also be invited to attend Healthcare Estates 2025 to showcase their winning project, and be offered a feature in Health Estate Journal, and inclusion on the IHEEM website. Janet Leeson – IEng: “I believe that this achievement will enable me to have a greater integration with my estates colleagues, and be able to mentor my department and encourage them to become professionally registered too.”

Paul Jameson AE (Ventilation): “Although I have been operating as an AE(V) for many years, I felt that being on the IHEEM- approved register for AEs was important for me, but also to give confidence to potential clients that my capabilities had been assessed, and that I was committed to working to an approved code of conduct. I found the process fairly straightforward, and professionally run by the IHEEM team. All too often the AE designation is adopted by individuals who have not been through any industry assessment, and I believe IHEEM is the right organisation to do this on behalf of NHS bodies.”

Engaging events start the year The Institute kicked off this year’s conference season with engaging events featuring comprehensive and insightful programmes, bringing together professionals keen to explore the latest industry trends and expand their expertise. The IHEEM Ireland & HSE in partnership with UHEI Sector Conference 2025 took place at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin in early April, and brought together estate management professionals from the higher education and healthcare sectors to explore best practices and ongoing initiatives in capital and estates project delivery. Presentations covered topics such as alternative energy solutions for resilient estates, strategic decarbonisation plans for Ireland’s healthcare infrastructure, and the role of digital healthcare planning in improving access and quality of care. The event offered delegates the chance to network, exchange ideas, and explore cross-collaboration projects. Looking ahead, the Institute is preparing for

the Authorising Engineers Conference at Epsom Racecourse on 8 July. The event will feature an update from the IHEEM Technical Platforms, a look at the latest compliance requirements and changes, and open-floor panel discussions, providing attendees with practical insights and knowledge to enhance their professional practice and gain valuable CPD.
