IHEEM is among a number of professional organisations supporting a day next month which will celebrate the often under-recognised contribution that a wide range of healthcare estates and facilities management and healthcare engineering

personnel make to the smooth and safe daily running of hospitals and other healthcare facilities. Also supported by organisations including the Association of Healthcare Cleaning Professionals, the Health Estates and Facilities Management Association, the Hospital Caterers Association, the Institute of Decontamination Sciences, the National Association of Healthcare Fire Officers, and the Society of Hospital Linen Services and Laundry Managers, the first ever National Healthcare Estates & Facilities Day takes place on 15 June. A dedicated web page (at www. healthcareefmday.org) lists some of the key EFM roles being celebrated, pointing out that when many people think of a hospital, their first thought is of ‘the amazing work of the paramedics, doctors, and nurses’. However, supporting them, it notes, is an army of EFM professionals working hard to keep both the clinical and non-clinical environment safe, clean, and well-maintained, and the key equipment running smoothly. An impactful video describes some of the key work that personnel ranging from porters, catering teams, security officers and cleaners, to

fire officers, maintenance engineers, and capital development personnel, do daily in healthcare facilities UK-wide. Overall, the video says, there are over 250,000 estates and facilities teams across the NHS ‘in all four corners of the UK’. As it puts it, ‘Wednesday 15 June sees the first national healthcare estates and facilities day celebrating the never-ending work of this committed workforce’. EFM professionals keen to recognise

their team, and share what they are doing to mark the day, can do so via an email link, and there is also the chance to register online for a free ‘Supporters’ kit’. Looking ahead, it is planned to hold a

national EFM day every year on the third Wednesday of June. IHEEM’s President, Paul Fenton MBE,

said: “The Institute is proud to be involved in this event, and to be a part of what I hope will become an important day in the annual calendar for our sector. I would encourage all of our members and affiliates to consider how they can individually and collectively celebrate the essential work of all our estates and facilities professions, and to share that via the dedicated website.”
