Newsletter being created to boost communication
Although the
Federation’s Executive Committee has only met once this year, members have been busy, writes IFHE General Secretary, Andy Wavell (pictured). He said: “The ability
to communicate directly with members continues to dominate the thinking of ExCo, and efforts to create a newsletter that will get to all members are ongoing. The work of the Communications Group will be rewarded with the first full edition, issued in April. “Following events in Ukraine, ExCo decided it should support the charitable donations being made to support those affected by the conflict, and has supported both the DEC appeal in the UK and the WHO appeal, and donated € 5000 via the International Committee of the Red Cross. “ExCo also discussed belated 50th celebrations for the formation of IFHE.
Mid-May deadline for Digest synopses
The Editorial Panel for the IFHE Digest 2023 has now been formed, and requests for articles circulated to all member organisations, as well as being put on the many social media platforms that the IFHE and the former use.
A reminder that synopses are required by 13 May 2022, and full articles by 29 July 2022. IFHE General Secretary, Andy Wavell, said: “Of continued interest is how the pandemic has changed thinking on the design and use
of healthcare facilities. Mindful of the need to maintain a workforce, it would be interesting to hear how Estates Departments are recruiting and retaining staff, and getting young people into the profession with the aim of creating a workforce for the future.” The key criteria for articles for the

It has been agreed that those invited to Rome would now be invited to the CHES Congress in Toronto this September (HEJ – February 2022), and recognition of their involvement be noted at one of the social events. Invitations are now being circulated, and discussions continue on the assistance to be offered to those attending. “ExCo continues to
be concerned at the lack of support for both the Buildings Award and Energy Awards. Entries to the former are – apart from one – all from Canada, and the latter has a majority of entries from USA and Canada. Exploring reasons for this lack of commitment, it was felt that the recent concentration on dealing with COVID and its impact on healthcare facilities did not leave time for managers to submit entries.”
A man full of life and personality
“On 2 April, 2022, Eng. Alberto Lena, 87, IFHE President from 1992 to 1994, died,” writes IFHE President, Daniela Pedrini. “He is survived by his wife, Lorena, children, and grandchildren. Alberto organised the fantastic 12th IFHE International Congress in Bologna in 1992, with many important initiatives that have characterised IFHE in its future developments. “Alberto was a dynamic man, a
strong leader, admired by his peers, and cultured, with a great personality. For many years he was Technical director at the Policlinico di Sant’Orsola in Bologna, and his life involved considerable travel, meetings, and volunteer work. He and Lorena were also a foster family for many children. Sadly, a few years ago he fell ill with Alzheimer’s, and Lorena was the family pillar for these years. She bravely shared his experience, and always made Alberto’s presence felt, because life is made up of encounters and relationships, and illness cannot take that away. Rest in peace Alberto.”
