Conclusions The pandemic has taken an enormous toll on healthcare staff. It has also presented an opportunity to utilise the learnings we have gathered from this challenging time to create a better working environment, and our approach has shown that this can be achieved using existing space. We have applied this methodology to several Trusts, and although the specific results vary, the same main trends emerge: lack of staff space, lack of focus on wellbeing, and admin-based staff open to continued homeworking, meaning that space-sharing solutions between departments can be utilised.


It is important to note the bridge


between clinical and non-clinical staff within this process. The best results occur when everyone is consulted equally, as there are many roles that straddle both types of spaces. To make elective recovery, we need to support the staff in their environments, creating a workplace and culture that focus on staff health and wellbeing, enabling those who work in hospitals to support the health of the population.

Sarah Miles


Sarah Miles is an associate director and Workplace Consultant advisory in Arcadis’s Workplace Consultancy Team. She has over 10 years’ experience of workplace design and strategy, focusing on changing ways of working to improve employee and company wellbeing, and provides strategic advice and delivers change programmes in the healthcare sector. She has worked across a number of sectors, including healthcare, education, financial institutions, and technology. Her experience has been focused on linking an organisation’s vision with the stated needs of its employees, ‘positively influencing stakeholders through the change in order to improve their working lives and productivity. Her background in design further enhances her ability to understand these requirements, ‘to translate them into real-time effects and outcomes on their assets’. She is a thought-leader in the sector, has spoken on several panels, and talks about pandemic recovery and the multi-faceted solution of hybrid working.
